hey everyone, so Dogshark and I, are getting ready to put a new rack in the Cobra, due to some major play in it. I noticed it when it was on the lift when we did our first inspection of the new car.

what have you guys put in ? and did you like it and/or have any problems with it ?

The stock one with a good pump and lines. Not much need for anything else.

Honestly, the AGR rack was almost identical to my OE 1994 cobra rack. It was 1/4 less turn per side, and a little better steering response. Its a very comfortable rack, and not too bad of a price. If you want quality, go with AGR, if you want a better warranty, buy a Kragen or Auto zone unit.

im totally with you on that notion, this car is a weekend warrior for the street, not a track car, just taking in the options ya know.

so its not "jerky", our stang is lowered with griggs springs and some stiff ass shocks, also has griggs bump steer tie rod ends. would this make it feel uncomfortable on normal roads with a 15:1 ratio ? or does the tighter ratio really not have much effect during straight driving ?

Nope.. your fine. If you drove my car and i never told you, you wouldn't know the difference. Its not as "quick" as you would think. 15:1 is just a fancy way to advertise it.

1999-2004 cobra. OEM only, no remanufactured units.

otherwise anything 1994-2004. i (once upon a time) found a website with 1999 cobra circle-track times before and after the ratio change. it shaved some time off the runs...

Honestly, if you find a used 1999 cobra one for $100.00 snag it. Otherwise buy a remanufactured 1994 V6 one for $150.00....

15.1:1 is not quick ratio, it's stock ratio. There is no such thing as an off the shelf quick ratio steering rack for mustangs.

AGR racks have excellent reputation with road racers. I think my rebuilt unit is an AGR, but I'm not 100% on that. The best part about it, is that you can actually call them, and ask them to build a rack with different valving, so it will change the assist, and in turn change the feel of the rack.

The 1994-1995 pushrod racks and 1996-2004 OHC racks are very different units. There are plenty of aftermarket options for the pushrod cars, none of which fit the OHC cars. The 2000R unit does fit the OHC cars and may be purchased through FRPP. The ratio is no different than a stock unit, but the T bar is unique to the 2000R and gives much better feedback; but the pricetag is purely insane.

my mistake. i forgot about the vacuum assist on the 96+ i stand corrected.

also, 2000R unit is costly. i got a 1999SVT instead.
i wouldnt spend that kinda money on a PS rack if it was made out of gold.

It's hydraulic assist on 96+ and vaccuum assist on 94-95.

I think you gentlemen are talking about brakes, not steering racks. All racks are hydraulically assisted, hence the power steering pump.

my mistake... all i know is there are power steering lines going from the master cylinder to the steering rack on 96+

anyways, SVT used the same rack for 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004. so keep that in mind when tring to find one. (if you chose to go that route)
