its idling nice and smooth today although I realized I have a slight leak on the collector which is probably the problem with the AFR still too high. Tried to fix it myself once and it helped but I really need someone to hold the top collector bolt in place while I hang on the pipe to get it in place while tightening the bolts from the bottom.

As for what is next, in tuning yes once the leak is fixed it is to put it in drive and take a short spin. But that will require a few things before that like the brakes filled/bled/finished, windows and crap like that.

I can say I slept harder then I have in a long time last night. It was one of those mornings when I finally decided to get up and go to the restroom I almost fell over, and then woke up.... I cant help but think with out that monkey on my back that it helped....

So awesome all the way around. Obviously it’s always dependent on how you feel but maybe if you have s good week you can have it out driving by next weekend.

chased that exhaust leak all damn day. It got better but never went away. Its almost like the headers have the collector at just barely the wrong angle. I tried loosening all the joints and basically hanging on it or pulling on it and it didn't work. I thought the mount in the middle might be holding it in the wrong place since it was changed a bit so I removed it and it sill doesn't fit. I am to the point now I am going to loosen the header bolts a bit and see if it helps or just moves the leak up to the headers but at this point I have cursed at it enough for one two days really. I do not remember a gasket or anything at the collector/x joint did I forget it after all this time?

It fires up pretty nice now but I still have not got it up to temp to enter learning mode because of the exhaust leak.

Congrats man! Pretty cool to see it running.

Looking at your last pic, I just noticed your discharge tube. Where did you get a metal one, or did you make it?

Thanks fellas. Spent some more time under it today chasing that leak. Seems like the collectors on the new JBA headers are just a tad off. I have almost everything tightened up ready to test but have to stop to help a friend with her daughters soccer game first.

Yes I did make the discharge pipe myself. I can't remember the radius of the tube but after measuring I just got one off of ebay with I think it was a 45 degree bend in it and then cut it down to fit. I am not good enough at welding yet so I had a local welder weld the bypass valve on it.

I swear I cannot ****ing win. I knew my exhaust leak was just because I was not able to reach both sides of the top bolt of the collector to tighten them down enough and all the help I enlisted to hold the wrench had the 2% rule kick their ass and mine in the process. How hard can it be to hold a ratchet with 6 extensions on it and just keep it from slipping off the bolt? In my garage/area very hard as both of the people I had helped ended up just rounding off the bolt head to where we could not put any pressure on it. Went and got new bolts/nuts today and started over. I was so f'n happy to finally get the leak sealed up. This meant I could finally get it up to temp to allow learning to start! I did how ever mention to my buddy to bring his timing light over but no no no he will just do it by ear takes 10 mins........... Deep down I knew that was the kiss of death. So we get it started and I am happy to see its finally up to 160 degrees and has entered learning mode. Over about the next minute the afr was starting to come down and it really sounded good. THEN suddenly it didn't. It stumbled and I had to tap the gas to keep it running, oh no... 10 secs later it does it again and I save it and about the time I am wondering what is going on my ever so helpfull buddy yells out that it doesn't seem to like the timing adjustments he is making. so I shut it down and tell him to lock the dist back down, he does and then leaves as he could only stay for a short while and then of course now that he has left it hates to start, really hates to idle and is smoking me out of the dam garage. So I went and got a timing light and I guess I will learn how to use it now, after I get it started again.............. I cannot curse loud enough at the moment and am really fighting the urge to just punch something hard enough to hurt myself.............. This is the 2nd time the friend I go to for motor knowledge has done something by feel/touch/**** that technology shtuff and it will be the last.

Pretty sure just as the file was starting to learn he corrupted it by making adjustments the computer didn't think would be happening. I guess tonight I will start a new one why not?!

Was he making the adjustments with the spout out? Or does the Holley efi eliminate the use of the spout?!?

right not spout with the holley. You do it when learning is off, which if he had started even 5 mins earlier it would have been fine as it had not yet hit 160. Once I found out what he was doing I turned off the motor, turned off learning, uploaded to the ecu and then he was able to make any adjustments but prior to that anything he did just confused the hell out of the computer less then a minute into learning the new routine. I am going to call holley tomorrow and see if I need to make a new baseline tune to start with or if there some way to salvage this one. Either way he will not be left unattended in my garage much like when my neighbors grand kids wonder in....

How is it so easy to corrupt a file with this system? I don’t see how it’s possible for a timing adjustment to ruin a tune file. I’m really curious how the conversation with Holley is going to go.

if it had already learned the system and had a better feel for it I have seen in videos where they take half the fuel out of the fuel table and then just started it up and the system would automatically start to correct the table. But in this case looking at the data it literally had only been in learning mode for less then 20-30 secs before he started on the dist. So it had a small/20 secs of regular running followed by 30 secs of WTF while its learning the system I would have to think would be corrupted as it was trying to figure out what he was doing and how to correct for it. Hopefully I can just delete that data and start fresh on the same tune and do not need to go back through and remember how to set the whole fresh base tune up.

I got one of those infared temp checker thingys and when I check the temp of each exhaust pipe right off the header I find cylinder 1 and 2 are 30-40 degree cooler then the rest. Double checked the plugs and they are both correct and tight, what else would cause this?

Difference of where coolant enters and exits the heads more than likely. If your not noticing a miss or knock I wouldn’t be concerned over that.

If your concerned pull all 4 plugs on that side and see if they all look similar. If there’s an issue it will always be apparent on the plugs.

well it doesn't really matter. I still can't get it to start. Took it back to TDC, spent some time with tech support and all I got was a rather large puff of smoke out from under the hood the last time I tried to start it so unless I get some amazing Idea of what to try I have no fuucking clue. Slept like shit last night and new I would because I was still too pissed off when it was time to go to sleep, tonight will be no different. It was running so very very well till he touched that damn dist for a fast adjustment by ear damnit I should have known better.

Sounds like he knocked it way out of time. If so it can cause a backfire through the intake.

Getting a timing light before you go any further would be a good idea.

That and don’t call that friend back over. As complex a build as you have, the last thing you want is some backwoods mechanic trying to tune it by ear. Lol

Yeah tuning by ear isnt where its at although folks still think its a great method! I prefer honing in the engine tune by making raspberry motor sounds.

I have heard of people doing it by ear but from what I remember you had to drive it between adjustments to listen for pinging and such to know when you have gone too far? I am not aware of people just listening to how the motor is idling and getting it more then just close to what it should be. If he lived across town or something and was half way here I could understand but he lives less then 5 mins away from me. His 10 mins adjustment by ear was 2 steps back for sure.......

Ehh...youll figure it out! Let me remind you who you are....a perseverance kind of guy. One that looks at the mountain top while climbing and never giving up despite the rocky cliff over hang hurtle you must endure.

    Just breath....youll get it!
