After two used oil analyses from Blackstone indicating high aluminum content found, I did some research and found that the timing chains can rub on the metal of the guides if they are worn.

I took a chance and had my mechanic put in the FRPP timing kit and he found the tensioner pushed its way through a guide and was wearing against the chain.

Anyways, wanted to post this for anyone at similar mileage (138k). Might as well spend ~$30 to have your oil checked.

It's a great reminder.
A few of us here have sets on the shelf like that, myself included.
Ive seen worse, and i will have a worst case scenario on an engine stand in a month or so.

Don't be the worst case!

This gets bad faster with crappy filters, low oil levels, or lousy maintenance schedules.

Oil will help the chain's slide along the guide
That looks like it hasn't seen oil in a bit
Oil changes on 2 and 4 valve are important
I do mine every 3000 regardless what manufacturer says
But I do use the proper oil weight
That's really important to

When I did my 4 valve cobra it had 19700 on it and my guide still had plenty of meat on them
But then again I change my oil sooner than what ford recommends

I’ve owned the car since it was new and ran Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic all its life on 5k or less intervals. The heads/cams were super clean and there weren’t signs of plastic chunks. The guide liners are plastic and simply wear over time and heat cycling.

My guess is everyone at some point is going to be pulling the front cover off.

This is a good reminder thank you. I actually found mine timing chain guides were worn when replacing the leaking oil pan gasket when I dropped the K. Metal bits in the oil pan. It was a nice and pleasant surprise to find.

Good reminder on black stone. How quick did you get your results back?

Sounds like you caught it just in time. I got my results in about 2 weeks.
