Did a little reading, but curious on some real world experience some of you may have.

I plan on pulling the engine out of my car when I do the engine upgrades. May seem extreme to some, but I see it as the best way to fix the oil leaks at the same time... and perhaps replace any exhaust components if the opportunity (money) presents itself. So. To get to the point. The summary of what I plan on doing....

302 with heads/cam/intake. GT40 intake, LMR's SVE 170 heads and E303 cam. I have zero intention of changing the gear ratio. I have no intent on rebuilding the transmission. Considered a shift improver kit, but I'm not set on that yet. But... since the engine will already be out... if I were to have any interest in changing the torque converter, that is the perfect time.

Why this is on my mind? Simple. I feel like the one in the car won't let the engine rev. It just feels too tight. In gear, 850 idle, that car will take off. It will idle away and shift into second and next thing you know, youre doing 20mph. While there should be some idle-away torque... it just feels like the engine can't spool up at all. Once it DOES wind up and hits the 1-2 shift, she gets on down the road. But I'd like to see the engine have a little more room to breathe. Especially if I'm changing the cam.

What I lack here is any experience with the stall speed. This is a street car. One that I want to remain comfy to road trip. I would like to at some point follow Sick Week for the whole run. Is 2500 rpm too high for this? 3000 seems ridiculous for a street car.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I don't have any experience with a converter upgrade, but did run the aode trans for over 20 years with similar engine mods to what you are planning.
As you any likely aware, heat is the #1 enemy of any auto trans. The factory cooling is very marginal at best, so additional trans cooling is a must with an aode.
I did many of the upgrades that were recommended for this trans and would suggest you consider them. Jmod, accumulators, springs, 4r70w pan and filter, syn mercon V, as well as a very bid stacked plate cooler. Higher stall converters creat alot of heat.
If you don't plan on any track time, 2400 to 2800 stall should be sufficient.

Following... I am planning a similar route with my car as far as mild H/C/I(tho I may leave the stock cam in). I don't really want to drop a ton of money into my AODE because I feel like the second I find an SN95 5.0 parts car with a T5 I am buying it and swapping the T5 into my AODE... That being said I kind of like the get in and go aspect of the automatic. Based on Wmac's post I might just add a trans cooler for now.
