We've owned this Mustang since new and I usually drive it weekly to kinda keep an eye on things. Its my wifes Mustang and she isnt car smart. She bought a new car in July and so we parked the Mustang for a month or more until we decided what we wanted to do with it. When I attempted to drive it to work one morning I noticed a distinct valve clattering that I had never heard before. I circled home and parked the Mustang and drove my truck as usual. I thought it might be the A/C compressor clutch dragging but upon removal of the wiring to the compressor I discovered that the clutch rotated with little if any resistance. After an oil and filter change and an inspection of the overall condition of the engine I am stumped. I drove it around the neighborhood yesterday and the clatter appears at the slightest of accelerator application. Im a vintage Mustanger so Im stumped at what could be the issue. I had an SN95 buddy tell me it could be a bent pushrod. Ive got an appointment with her mechanic to do a diagnostic on it. Your speculation is welcome.

final check start engine without belt listen for noises any check further into engine

Are you positive it is valvetrain noise? Since it is only on acceleration, I don’t think it is. Is the noise similar to spark knock? I know the New Edge V6’s have a variable intake runner system (or something like that, I don’t know much about them) that can clog up and cause really bad spark knock.

Just an idea

Only on acceleration is kinda weird. You don't hear anything at idle? Is it only when tipping into the throttle? Or is it the whole time you are on the accelerator.

My first thought was maybe loose IMRC but I think 2000's didn't have that yet, right?

At idle I do not hear the clatter, at the slightest application of throttle the clatter starts and increases in intensity with more throttle.

Yes, it is a rapid, metallic clatter that is has a light ton that spark plug knock.

When I had the belt removd I did spin all the accessory pulleys and they seem to spin freely.

To answer shovel, I believe they were added in 2001.

As others said it sounds like detonation. Carbon buildup can do that.
