3:73 or 4:10 gears?

Hello,

If you don't made lot of mileage and if you go each week at the drag choose the 4.10, but if your Mustang is a daily driver the 3.73 is a better choice, also you can choose a 3.90.

What gear do you have now ?

If you look the certification Label under the letters "AX" if you have a :

M ; it's a 2.73
Z ; it's a 3.08
E ; it's a 3.27

Why are you guys suggesting 3.73's for a DD? Just curious, cause i'm considering the mod myself for my 97 auto gt, which is also my DD.

Not as much shifting just going around town, and lower rpms on the freeway at any given speed in 5th gear compaired to 4.10s.

Ive got 4:10's In 5th gear at 70mph im at 2200rpms :dunno: Also he has an auto so shifting isnt a prob. 4:10's silver :thumb:

That's more like what I've read everywhere...I was just surprised that more of you 4.10 people didn't chime in here.
5.0wned - the 5.0L doesn't need the extra torque down low, so 3.73's might suit you better, but my measly 4.6 npi could use the help! lol Plus, for the 150-200 rpm difference at highway speeds (between a 3.73 and a 4.10), I don't think it's gonna break ya.
I'm still KIND of trying to decide between 3.73's or 4.10's mainly because I'm worried about my auto bangin off the rev limiter on WOT shifts with the 4.10's ... I've read/been told that lots of people just drop in the 4.10's without changing shift points or anything, without problems though. As long as that's true, I think I'm going 4.10.
Does anyone think the highway gas milage will be any different between a 3.73 and a 4.10?

I'm around there with my stock gears man, that doesn't make sense at all. Unless you have a really tall wheel/tire combo (like 30" diameter! lol), something else has got to be causing your rpm's to be so low.......or your memory isn't serving you correctly. I know they're not 100% accurate, but there are a number of online engine speed calculators (you entire your wheel/tire diameter, differential gear ratio, transmission gear ratio, and speed, and it tells you what RPM your engine should be at. With a stock diameter wheel (25.7") you should be running at about 2,6xxrpm's at 70MPH. :dunno:
EDIT: Just realized you said FIFTH gear. lol Guess the above info still applies to anyone who's running an AUTO though. 4th gear ratio is .70:1 if anyone wanted to google "engine speed calculator" and try it for themselves.

I may be old but theres nuthin wrong with my memory. :eek: Ive set my cruise at 70mph many times and my rpms are 2200. And i know i have 4:10 gears. 18 in wheels have anything to do with it? :dunno: Or maybe because i have a tr3650?

Yah, that's why I put the "EDIT" part at the end of my post. Didn't realize you had a 5spd, which is why the rpm's are lower. You're 5th gear is .62:1, where the auto's 4th gear is .70. And with an 18" wheel you're probably at a larger diameter than stock.

I have a 5 Speed and the 4.10's are great. I like the 3.73's but again its all preference. My personal opinion is with the Automatic, 4.10's. IF you were going to do a swap for a 5 or six speed maybe go with the 3.73's....
