I just got my gears installed today, and ordered the Speed-Cal to adjust the speedometer. On the Dallas Mustang website, the calculator wants you to put in the original axle ratio, which were 3.08s, and the speedo gear tooth count. Anybody have any idea what speedo gear I have on a 97 GT vert with automatic tranny and 3.08 gears?

Thanks.

Just to give you a response. I would call a ford dealer and have them figure it out. I would then call another ford shop like a performance mustang shop and have them act as a crossreference.

Well for one, 3.08's were not in the 97's so you can't go off that. I would also check to see if it was a 2.73 or a 3.27

Mmmm, the pinion gear read "3.08" but there's no tag on the case, so someone may have stuck those in or special ordered them at purchase. Dunno. I'll just call up Dallas Mustang and have them give me sample codes to try and then drive parallel to a car I know is calibrated.

What a pain!

You may have the 3.08's in there now, but they are not the original rear gears. It will either be a 2.73 or a 3.27 as they stopped using the 3.08 in the GT/Cobra in 1995.

To my knowledge the only gear in almost all 2V's is 3:27, they couldn't possibly have put 2.73.....it wouldn't move. It would be like a moped with a header.... :rollinglaugh:

My 97 had 3.08's also. Most 96-97 auto's had 3.08's and std's had 2.73, 3.27 was an option.
I got your back Blackfang.... O0

I dont remember having to know the tooth count for the speed-cal. I just put in the code for 3.08's to 4.10's off the chart on their website.
BTW, the speed-cal is an easy job, took my son and I about 30 mins to install it..... And its dead on!

If thats true, then that explains why 96,97 were gutless terds. Are you sure about that? 3.08 and 2.73 were common in 5.0 I know.

My guess is it will take me all Saturday afternoon as I'm an electric dweeb (ok with a wrench though).

AWESOME signature image. May I ask who did the art work?

My 96 auto had 2.73 from the factory.

Best way to do the speedcal is install it then drive it 10 miles on the highway with another car to clock of the miles...then go on the Dallas Mustang site in the speedcal forum and tell them what you came up with ie; 9.3 miles etc...then they will give you the perfect code to enter.

The 3.08 gear set doesn't do much better, but I got a prochamber, magnaflow muffler, and BBK plenum, 70mm throttlebody, cold air intake, and then followed it up with a dyno tune to baseline it. 200hp and 272trq. It made a difference but was subtle. But the 3.73 gears really woke the car up and it practically leaps when you floor it. I'm curious to see what I get out of the PI intake and comp 262 cams when they're installed later in the month, and then retune...and I haven't even started the spring mods for the 2005 Mustang yet...

Well, I just called Dallas Mustang to ask if they specific instructions for a automatic transmission, and nobody on site remembered ever doing an automatic! Obviously I'll have to remove the center console to get in there, as I don't have the space the manual shift provides under the shift boot.

It's never easy...

You don't have to remove the console, just the trim around the shifter. Then you'll see the 4 bolts that hold the shifter in place. Loosen them up enough to run the wires. On the right side you'll notice a little indention, thats where I ran the wires through. Snug the bolts back down ( careful not to crush the wires) put the trim back on and thats it. Its alot easier then it seems, once you start you'll fly right through it.... O0
