oh....using an NPI 5.4 lower is a bit lighter than the PI versions.
so PI swap, higher compression and lighter than a comparable 01+.
so that'd be cool.

But worried about top end walls with only adapter plates.

Thats why you dont do adapter plates. You take an edelbrock 4.6l intake and cut it in half. Weld in a new center section to make it wide enough to fit the 5.4l. Then youll also get more top end flow. Still restricted by the tiny valve, but itll help lol.

Dang. the plates are $115
based on the size of the engine and ability of the heads.
I would THINK...cams that favor the intake at higher RPM, soul allow it to fill the combustion chamber better.

Also tuning an larger injectors SHOULD aid if plates had to be used.
Pure conjecture.
Sadly I had the Hardball'r. I didn't have any of these concerns.

Now the edelbrock looks promising, have to speak with a welder first.
It may be a $500 intake.
But if I kept the top port the same, any 4.6 plenum should fit.
Being a bigger engine, it needs air.
I would be looking at BBks 78mm setup.

But purely conjecture...

we got off topic from the cams haha
But I did in fact just mention more intake oriented cams. so I think we are good.

Wait until 96blak54 chimes back in. He will be able to point you in the right direction for the cam and intake situation. Have you checked his build thread out?

I've been bouncing all over the internet this morning.
Cams for the 4.6
gearing opinion for a 100shot
5.4 stuff.
weight reduction ideas.

all over the place.
I'll have to give it a look.
probably actually start my own as well.

Starting a build thread is the best idea. You can put your thoughts to your build and we can comment. Itll help the direction of the build. Keeping ideas fresh.

Like lwarrior1016 stated, hack an eddy intake up to fit the wider 5.4l. Its what I did. Worked out great. Only thing negative, the stock hood. I had to cut an opening for the plenum. I could run an aftermarket hood with a slight cowl, but funds chose for me not to.

The 5.4l is a great deal heavier and needs to be considered to the direction of the car. For me, a weekend cruiser.

Valve hole size depicts a choke point at a particular piston speed. The phenomenal piston speed of a 5.4l achieves the choke point early! So no mater what cam or intake, throttle body, air intake....a 1.650 hole will only flow so much till its maxed out and chokes the piston capability of pulling in air efficiently.

I agree. If you wanted to do a standing mile elapsed time competition. ...id say 5.4l it, but otherwise killing performance adding 100lbs to the nose for taking curves.
