Put some of this in my build threads and had a couple people make mention about it. Figured if I put everything I did in here, might save someone time looking up part numbers, bolt sizes, etc to install the 3v tray. Hope it helps

Below info is for a 03/04 cobra block with a 4.75L stroker crank, not sure of fitment with a stock stroke crank.

When I started looking into the aftermarket windage tray options for the 4.6 I didn't like the idea of having to use a combination of 2 oil pan gaskets and/or silicone for a tray that mounts between the block and oil pan. I know pleanty of people have used the pan mount kind with no issues but it just screams oil leak to me. Also to consider is the additional space thats created between the pump pickup and bottom of the oil pan when using the pan/block mounted tray with extra gaskets and/or layers of silicone (pushes the pan away, and can be amplified even worse when a deeper aftermarket pan is used). So after some homework and seeing mention of people using the factory 3v, and what i refer to as a 'true' windage tray. I purchased the factory 3v full length tray from my local Ford dealer (part number 4R3Z-6687-BA). The issue I ran into with my 03/04 cobra block with 4.75L stroker crank is the windage tray sits too close to the rods bolts. The 03/04 cobra blocks use the a 4 bolt main which sits the tray lower to the block/crank instead of like on the 96-98 teksid blocks with the 6 bolt mains. So this put the rod bolts way too close for comfort:

I marked the areas I wanted notched and took it to our Bridgeport. Some people cut the whole section out, but I just notched out the spots I needed to. I bought this shortblock as a given up layaway so it had main bolts instead of studs. I removed all the bolts and for main studs I used Ford 3L2Z-6345-AA. The first picture below shows the tray/bolts before I did any modification. Next pictures show marking and notching out spots for bolts to clear.

To fasten the 3v windage tray to the 3L2Z-6345-AA studs, I went to Fastenal and got M8 top lock nuts and torqued them down to 20ft lb.

Next I cut the factory scraper off the new cobra oil pump pickup. No need for it with the full tray. BE SURE TO Tape off the ends so no metal gets inside the pickup.

The pickup spacer is from MMR and .250 oversize and overpriced. For future motors I'll be going to Fastenal for about 1/8 the price I paid for this. The spacer will need a M8 bolt (Fastenal) to hold down the pickup. Using a new Ford oil pump, the 2 bolts for the oil pump side of the pickup are M6 that I picked up at Fastenal. Then all 3 pickup bolts I used red loctite and torqued to 20ft lb.

I just got my teksid 2v motor on the stand and I'll be installing a 3v tray on it also. Should be more straight forward since the main caps sit it a little higher, but I'll get that info with pics soon as I get it done.

Very nice write up! I'm getting ready to tackle a Canton oil pan and windage tray install on my Cobra next week myself.

Nice write up. I was running the 3V tray on my Romeo engine, and will be using it on my teksid build as well....

I used the livernois oil scraper. similarly we had to cut some material off the pick up tube. i TOO used 2 oil pan gaskets.

I just finished installing a Canton windage tray and road race oil 2000 Cobra R oil pan on my 2001 Cobra. I also cut off the factory scraper from the stock oil pick up tube and I also had to bend the Canton windage tray slightly as the oil pick up was touching it just a bit.

I used a new gasket between the oil pan and the windage tray and silicone between the windage tray and the block. After driving the car for two days after the Canton install, there are no leaks.

For silicone, I used a tube of Victor Reniz aluminum silicone that truck mechanics use to seal the Ford 7.3 diesel truck oil pans.

The Canton 2000 Cobra R road race oil pan is now on my 2001 Cobra. I threw on some JBA shortie headers and Energy suspension poly motor mounts while I had the K member out.

i know this is ancient. but I'm going to be in a similar situation and am wondering which windage tray to use on mine. teksid block w/03 cobra crank/rods. Anyone? Maybe the 3v tray will work fine on mine?

The 3v tray should work just fine on your engine. That’s what I’ve used in the teksid blocks I’ve built.
