Blew the transmission a while back, I still have the old one. Is rebuilding it worth it? Where do I start? What to buy? Where to buy from? How easy would it be to do myself? I believe the clutch plate burnt up because when it shit the bed is smelt like rotten eggs/sulfur

The 4r70 isn’t a difficult transmission to build. There is an entire rebuild series on YouTube that guides you step by step how to do it. I would suggest first buying an ATSG overhaul manual and reading through that, along with watching the videos. That way you can read it and learn terminology, as well as seeing the video and seeing what the parts are and how they go together.

I used to build a ton of those Tranny's. They weren't Electronic yet, but the AOD from '78 up to our models are all the same, except for the Electronic Solenoid Shifting Valve Body that our later Mustangs came with. I'm a bit confused though; you said Clutch Plate as in a Manual Transmission. Is your Tranny an Automatic or Manual, just to get it straight in my head? If it is a 4r70w Automatic, BLOW out the Cooling Lines and get a NEW Torque Converter. AVOID ALL Metal Shavings, and CLEAN completely all parts with Solvent and Compressed Air. It's not a really hard rebuild as WARRIOR said. But NOT paying attention to the details will bite you if the Valve Body sticks and the Valves don't open and close properly. Also, if you open up the Valve Body, make sure you follow where all the Check Balls go!! I think you'll need to buy some specialty tools to put the Inner and Outer Rubber Rings into the Drums. If all your Clutch Plates are good and not burnt, use Sandpaper to scuff them up a little, so they break in with the clutch packs in the kit. Get a complete Rebuild Kit with all New Clutches for the Clutch Packs. Oh, and soak the Clutches in Automatic Transmission Fluid first before putting them in. DON'T put them in DRY. PLEASE, be careful and take it slow and watch everything you do, front back side to side all at the same time, so something doesn't break or seals may get cut. Enjoy my friend!!
