Hello all, I have a 97 sn95 that I’m working on. Customer thought the transmission was smoked. After further inspection I don’t believe it to be. Story is they were driving the car and it stopped going into any gear other than reverse. The shifter will only shift to reverse, it doesn’t move into park drive etc. I disconnected the shift cable and shifted the trans manually by hand and it shifts all the gears fine. Has anyone had this problem before? Anywhere I should check? I don’t believe the linkage is broken but I will double check that.

I believe I found the culprit, still uncertain as to why? Maybe the spring inside?

Shifter appears to run through all the gears, flushed the pan replaced filter, no material or any eye brow raising concerns. Got it all back together and it still only has reverse, double checked fluids, and only starting in neutral. Would the neutral safety switch cause it not to go into forward gears?

The mlps (nss) can cause all sorts of strange issues. Usually the first sign that it’s failing is downshifting into 3rd for no reason. But it controls many aspects of the transmission.

Only issues I’ve ever seen it do is require the car to be in N to start. I’m leaning towards the transmission being bad now. I put the car on jack stands and the tires (driver side) rolls fine. Buy once it’s on the ground it refuses to go anywhere ??

You put it in drive, hit the gas and it revs like in neutral.
I have to really give it throttle to move and even then it’s only when it wants to and a couple miles per hour… my guts telling me something is bad internal. Forward clutches maybe? Most likely going to yank it out tomorrow and open it up

Excited/kinda nervous to tear this one open. I’ve done a few 60s and 80s as well as the 5r55s so I’d assume it’s not much different. Biggest headache is going to be taking it off on the floor

4r70’s are easier to build than 4l60’s. You just have to make sure you don’t cut the seals on the input shaft. That will smoke the forward clutches too.

Got the transmission off Saturday and back on the road Sunday evening. Just as suggested, forward drum and clutches were toasted. Never seen clutches and steels that smoked. Luckily I had a spare direct drum from a good transmission I bought some years ago. Everything else in this trans looked to be in good shape and you can definitely tell it’s been gone through at some point in its life. I will say these 4r70w are definitely a breeze compared to the 60s and 80s I’ve done
