Hi all, recently picked up a new to me 99 Cobra that's in beautiful shape, Vermillion red, black leather interior...it's everything I wanted...except the tail lights are cracked. The owner pointed it out to me but I didn't think much of it, I figured just get aftermarket ones. Well after getting home I started noticing a dilemma, nothing seems to fit the 99-01 Cobra

What are my options in this situation other than paying $1500 for some tail lights? I really don't mind putting the GT style you can get for $60, what prevents those from fitting? I can see in the pics at LMR they have the 5th hole that's plugged, can't you just remove the plug and use that for the 5th bulb? I'm not super in love w the amber lens, they're tail lights ‍♂️

This reminds me of this old 65 Chrysler 300 I had, nothing fit it except parts from another 65 and aftermarket parts were nil. I hated that car and was so happy when I sold it on eBay and sent it to Norway, I feel like it's haunting me again

the wiring is slightly different between the two with the separate turn signals but otherwise they will just bolt up. You should be able to rewire them to work if you wanted to.

Thank you, so if they'll bolt right up I'm a little confused why you need to rewire? Is the turn signal going to sit in some weird position within the GT housing? So it'll physically fit but the lighting configuration will be off?

The amber section of 99/01 tails is the turn signal. The turn signal is an entirely separate bulb from the brake lights.

A standard GT/V6 taillight does not have that separate section of the housing for the turn signal, the turn signal works through the brake light bulbs.

Any New Edge taillight will physically fit and mount, but the wiring is different between them.

as he said there is a different bulb with a different filament to light up for the turn signals. Because of that they wiring is different. I don't think it would be too hard to do but I have never done it myself. I know to go from GT-cobra lights there is a wire you need to run up to the pedal area but for the opposite all the wiring should be there I think it is just a matter of getting the right harness/bulb holder and wiring it in place.

The dilemma only lies in how you are going to use the car. If it's a driver, go with the V6 GT tailights. If it's a nice all original and you want to keep it that way, the usual asking price is $900 on facebook market place. The harnesses go for $200 plus, but there are instructions online to rewire. Take heart. I hounded LMR for years to have a replacement 99-01 Cobra front bumper and they finally delivered. Maybe the tailights are next?

I would go with the cheaper lights for now and keep my eyes open for a deal here/there. Maybe you can get lucky and find a separate drivers/pass side and save a few bucks buying one at a time.

Also where are they cracked at? Plastic can be repairable depending on where/how.

I’ve called LMR several times doing the same thing:) guy I talked to said they know it’s hot item and they are working on it but nowhere close on horizon.

I found a local guy w an almost perfect looking pair for 1k, probably going to bite the bullet and get em. Only saving grace is my passenger side is perfect so I’ll be able to recoup some money, hell, I might just keep it as spare

Unfortunately it’s not a crack, it’s a hole, it looks like something fell on the car in a garage or something because I just noticed the paint in bumper area has cracks from some sort of sharp impact…it’s not peeling/flaking yet but at least I have excuse to get the Cobra bumper now

There's a thread on SVTP with LMR in it. They are pulling for it too, but nothing yet. They definitely know there is a demand.

Ford has held back on allowing those Amber's to be reproduced.

Sad, because many of us cobra folks had ours stolen before we bought our cars.

Everyone talks about keeping their cars stock looking, especially terminators, except when it comes to those 99-01 cobra taillights.

Yeah.. people love amber lights.have a set myself. To put Amber's on a non amber light car you have to cut a wire under the dash. The opposite swap I do not know.

My turn signal is in the same corner light as the amber lights. You just cut down the nib, and drill a small pilot hole in the center, then use a 1" hole saw to slowly cut a hole.

There is reflector material inside there.

It is no different than the cobra lights except it is red and not amber. The Amber's are EU anyway.

If you use an extra 1" ID washer, the light fixture seals tighter....or just run a ring of permatex along with the original washer.

I used to have a New Edge but sold it because it was an automatic and now I have an s95 with a stick. I'm really surprised to read that the New Edge tail lights will fit a S95 body. I'll have to take a closer look. But in the meantime I kind of like the funky look of the s95 tail lights.FB_IMG_1720827209802.jpg

I added a light there on mine. It isn't as bright as the two above it, but you can still see it is lit up. You will need to drill a hole and put a notch in it so it can attach. What I did was put a piece of tape over one of the other holes and then used a knife to cut the hole out. Now take the piece of tape with the hole in it and move it to the bottom light spot and apply it and cut it out.

No. A New Edge light will not fit a SN95.
