Im reinstalling the mach 460 in my 96. Mainly for the stock head units. I really want something better than 18 year old speaker sound quality though. With the price of NIB replacement speakers at $80 ea, not including the tweeters, im going to have a small fortune wrapped up in replacing them all with Ford pieces. Enough so that I could easily afford some quality aftermarket pieces for the same price.

Has anyone replaced them with aftermarket component speakers run by the stock amps? Whats your experience? Hows the sound quality?

at one point I knew of one speaker that I suspected would work with the stock amps but its been a while and I never found anyone that wanted to buy it and upgrade the stock system. Problem is that the 5 x7s are an 8 ohm woofer and most aftermarket speakers are 4 ohm full range drivers. They are both speakers but not interchangeable. The tweeter now that is a 4 ohm driver but it can be a bit challenging to find a speaker that will fit there as most are either 3" speakers or 1" tweeters and its only a high range/tweeter signal and low powered so its not suitable to drive a full range component set.

now pull the stock amps(they have been more trouble lately with staying on and draining batteries) and then you have any number of options open to you limited only by budget. you can keep the stock deck if you want it for the look or just do like I did and the face it held on by 2 screws. Take it off and trim 2 plastic tabs, put a piece of felt on the back and when you take the face off of an aftermarket removable face deck you can put the stock face back in and it looks perfectly normal.

Get rid of the Mach 460 garbage. Run a quality 4 channel amp, good speakers and subwoofers if you enjoy bumpin

Im going for a stock look. OEM head units are a must for me. Im not too worried about bumping or being the most impressive sounding stereo on the block. I just want to enjoy listening to the radio and was thinking it may be a viable option to upgrade just the speakers. Im glad I asked, I had no idea the woofers were 8ohm, I would have just assumed they were 4. I guess Ill just bite the bullet and buy new OEM replacement speakers for it. Perhaps Ill find some replacement amps in time, as well, for when they fail!
