I put this question into google, trust me you do not want to know the results. :tongue3: I admit I know very little about motors and have been learning a lot on my build. While I don't know much in that area, I know ZERO about transmissions. I don't know what kind I have other then a 5 speed manual or what options there even is for upgrades or the advantages or disadvantages of the options available. any help? I think other then a built block the tranny would be my next major project and just trying to get a little educated about them.

You could go with a Astro a5 or or Gforce t5 you can still use your existing bellhousing and shifter. Same weight all other options end up weighing more . Then you could go tremec 3550, 600 or then we get into the good old t56 these range from 2k-4K g force can be done for under 2k

What are you trying to learn exactly? You want to know how to build them, or how they work, or just what you have?

Well I would actually like to know what kind I have as I am that ignorant on the subj. But also like to know if a good deal on one comes up that I should get as I also have no idea which ones would fit or what it would take to do it. I can say I would like to go to a 6 speed to both have the correct gears and better cruising milage.

You are going to have a T5 in your car. You should have a tag on transmission case that will tell you what kind it is when you run the serial number. Your best bet for a 6 speed would be going with a T56 (cobra transmission). You would need a bell housing for it. I think 95opal did this swap.

Ok, I couldn't remember. I know he had to use the quick time bell housing. I thought it was a t56.

The t-5 in our cars is similar to the t-5 in the fox bodies other than ours are 3/4" longer. And that extra length is in the input shaft and HAS to have the matching bellhousing.. You can use a fox t-5 if your in a pinch but the shifter will be 3/4" closer to the dash too.
here's some info for you http://pro-forceperformance.com/

evilcw311 is correct I had a tr3650 built by promotion performance. I like my shit bullet proof lol.

ttocs if you don't plan on exceeding the limits of the stock block, you may consider looking for a used tremec 3550 or a tko 5 or 600. all those can be had for decent money moving up to a t56 is a tad more and youll want to gear the car for the 6 speed at that point. If you go new the sky is the limit cheapest would be a basic astro A5 or gforce t5 out of the two I would look at the astro as they use bigger a gear set. If your going to get serious get a hold of walt at promotion performance and let him walk you threw the options, probably the best in the country when it comes to building a high end manual tranny Just be prepaired to drop a nut if you do, that goes for any of the high end built manuals.

I may be wrong but I thought the standard T56 and standard T5 had the same OD ratio and the T56 was just a little closer with a extra gear in there?

Could be WAY off but was under that impression for some reason.
