Anyone else have a T-56 Magnum?

I ask because it seems that all T-56 Magnum transmissions have this loud thrumming at low engine RPMs, sounding like bearing noise. Further, has anyone else heard of people using a trans oil / gear oil cocktail to quiet it down? I'm considering this but I'm wary of longevity of the components doing so. I drive a Mustang, not a Mac truck, sheesh. Thanx.

I installed my magnum and put a few miles on it before the electrical problems and I never noticed any noise from mine at all and idle, running or when I got on it. Did you check the runout prior to installing it or just toss it on there? I checked mine and it was off just enough that I had to get the adjustable pieces to fix it.

Magnums are known for shifting like a Mack truck . Like Scott mentioned did you check run out ? Or slap it in and send it . I know with my tkx it was out enough that I had to install offset dowel pins to remedy the issue .

IIRC I think I was JUST out of tolerance by a few thousands but it was enough that they said to make the adjustment. I didn't notice it was any harder to shift than the stock 5 speed myself. I still have the plate to measure it with hangin in my garage if ya want to use it.

They only get harder to shift at 6500 rpm plus when not dialed in correctly but they can’t start making noise as the input shaft is slightly off centre .

gotcha. So far the only thing that feels weird is sliding into 6th while rolling at highway speeds. It just feels strange after driving the stock 5 speed since it was new....

Have an ancient "viper spec" T56 in my 95 Cobra. Only complaint is how easy it is to money shift from 3rd to 2nd.

I’ve put 15k hard miles on my T56 Magnum and that’s using Dexron III fluid. Never had any issues shifting above 7500 rpms.

I put a T56 Magnum in my 04 Mach 1 last winter. At that same time I aslo did a McLeod lightened billet steel flywheel with RXT clutch...other stuff too but doesn't really apply to this...anyway...

The noise I experience is what is known as "gear rollover". It sounds like rattling and is due to the reduced mass from the lighter weight clutch / flywheel assembly. Due to there is less rotational weight, it has less inertia, which keeps that gear mesh loaded against the front profile of the gear teeth. Gears 1 - 4 will cause this noise at low RPM / high load. If I keep RPM's above 3k there is no noise. Gears 5 & 6 don't have that issue as *I think* they are on a dfferent rail...not sure on that one.

Anyway, it's the best shifting performance / HD transmission I've ever driven, but if I'm trying to creep / be (somewhat lol) quiet, yeah...it can be noisey.

Lol sounds like my stock 3650 with a mcleod steel flywheel and rst clutch

It’s the dual disc clutch they’re fuckin noisey but they work good , my 3rd gen dodge even did the same thing with twin disc south bend

That also makes noise, but it's not the noise I'm refering to. I'll illustrate...

If you have a spare trans laying around, grab the input shaft and twist it quickly back and forth / clockwise - counterclockwise...however you prefer it be described. You will feel and hear the lash in the gearset. If you just twist one way, forward (or reverse) the gear teeth are loaded. You do not hear the gear lash. Stock flywheels are engineered heavy enough to account for this, The inertia keeps the gearset loaded.

The noise experienced is gear lash.

The only noise a twin disk clutch makes is when it's disengaged...they rattle. When a clutch is clamped / engaged, it would not matter how many disks it has.

What fluid are you using?
What I like best thus far is Amsoil syncromesh. Before that I tried the Amsoil manual transmission fluid. There was a huge difference between the two.

Yea I see what you’re saying my tkx makes the similar noise when spinning the input shaft . Zero play
