I'm currently looking to sell my 4R70W from my mustang and I have a guy with a 4th gen E-series van who needs a new one. His car has the 4.2L V6.
I'm wondering if mine will fit in there without any issues. I read that some use the AODE and some the 4R70W.

Would it be safe to run a 4R70W instead of the AODE even with the slightly different gearing? Would this cause problems?
Does anyone know if the bellhousing on the 4.2 will match up to the 4.6 since the bellhousings on the AODE isn't removable?

IIRC, the 4R70W is better than the AODE and can be built up nearly bullet proof. A 5R55s would be sick.. As for the bellhousing, I'll research that.

What year is this van?

IIRC, the E series were the same as the f-150 4.2. I know if you hook up a auto with the 4.2 in a mustang you need the correct flex plate, not sure if there's a difference between the autos for hooking up. And if it bolted up I'm not sure if there's going to be another conflict on the van either.

Mainly only know about manual + 4.2.

I'm not entirely sure on the year of the van. My mechanic called me and told me his neighbor needs a new tranny.

I know its the current generation (fourth generation 1992–2014).

So I've heard. But will it be safe to replace the AODE with a 4R70W?

And thank Josef. Hopefully the bellhousings match up. I've searched on wiki but I'm damn near lost.

The 4.2 (larger displacement 3.8L) bellhousing pattern is (should be anyways) the same as the 302/5.0L/351W/5.8L.

So a trans from a mod motor car will not bolt up.

The bell housing pattern is different for a 4.6L or 5.0L/3.8L/4.2L engine and the two are incompatible. The two case types can be distinguished by looking at the starter flange area. If the starter has three attaching bolts, the case fits only 4.6L engines. A two-bolt starter indicates a 5.0L/3.8L/4.2L compatible case (casting number may begin with "F4ZP", not available before 1994)
