wondering what it would cost to swap an auto to a 5 speed?....would it be much more expensive than rebuilding a broken auto?

First off you need to decide what you really want; a built auto and a basic 5/6 speeds are two different things.

If you spend money where you need it and save on other stuff by buying used stuff it's about even, I've done the math.Watch the boards and Ebay and you will get some deals.

I've seen complete auto to swap kits using a mixture of used/new parts from MPS for @$2000

Building an auto is also gonna cost a nice amount. A good TC will run you about $900, then doing a Jmod or shift kit or manual valvebody will add some more as will a oil cooler and getting a better oil pan (deeper with more capacity)

So it comes down to do you want to shift yourself or not?

While the MPS kit is "complete", you can piece together your own swap for much less.
