It's tough to do with a stock shortblock, due to the compression ratio... but you could contact someone like Ed Curtis at Flowtech Induction... he will set you up with a full H/C/I package custom tailored to your desires.

Well here's the million dollar question. How much do you want to spend? If you want to spend 1500 bucks, it'll never happen.

stock motor with just basic heads cam intake / bolt ons is around 270-300rwhp.

If you want over 300+rwhp some with tunes and longtubes see 300+ like 310-320rwhp with the trickflow , afr heads.

I will use my cars 3 setups for example.

My car with the stock 302 motor with trickflow heads,Fcam trickflow street heat intake shorty headers basic bolt ons, put down around 273rwhp. with a tune and upgraded the throttle body from a 65mm to a 75mm and changed few small things and pulleys it was right around 295-300rwhp.

My new 306 c.i motor with more compression new pistons/ rings. much bigger comp cam, ported trickflow trackheat heads and intake long tubes etc is around 330-360rwhp. last time on the dyno with no compression in cylinders 1 and 2 bad rings and valve seals it still put down 295-300rwhp lol motors rebuilt now. so should still be around 330-350rwhp. ( I hope) But not planning on touching it dynoing it leaving it alone now.

So that being said stock motor with heads cam around 270-300rwhp is where you should be at.

but if you go with stock ported heads or gt 40 heads. small e cam or small cam your not gonna make over 300rwhp. 240-270rwhp.

SO you deff want a nice set of trickflow or AFR heads to do it.

a nice 306 or 331 stroker /347 stroker with same heads cam should get you around 350-400rwhp. ;) food for the thought

or take my advice, if i was to do my engine over again, If I had the money and while it was apart go big or go home, do a 351 windsor stroker 393w or 408 big heads big cam 10to 1 or 11 to 1 compression your talking 450-500rwhp on motor alone ;) :) and on pump gas

Like everyone said, to be in the 300+ rwhp club on a stock bottom end you need the good stuff. A great HCI is the ticket. I have a 306 with stock style pistons, AFR165 heads, Holley Systemax intake, and Comp Cams Magnum 281HR with supporting mods = bigger injectors with matching mass air flow, full race exhaust, Diablo chip, etc. Mine made 306rwhp and 330rwtq.

sounds like those are low numbers for your setup though fyi. or low compresion / mustang dyno / safe tune? my setup is a trickflow 170cc heads ported with matching ported track heat intake, comp cam, long tubes 10 to 1 compression 306 and my puts down 320-330rwhp on a safe tune on a dynojet, and with more timing an advanced race tune on 93 pump gas it put down 361rwhp. and my cam I belive is the next smaller under yours I run the xe274HR comp cam.

If you're gonna do it and go big or go home style the best way to start would be with a 4.125 bore block, since to be bulletproof at 500 horse you need a better block anyhow, and the big bore blocks aren't anymore money. My pipe dream build is at least a 363 in a Dart SHP block.

Purpose. Budget. And future plans all play a big part in this. Stock shortblock will need good heads, a good intake, larger throttle body/injectors, a good cam, and a good tune. But it's very do-able. The problem with building a 300+rwhp naturally aspirated five-oh, is that with those mods, if you decide to add boost, you will probably grenade your block.

It all really depends on what you want and what you will be using it for. If 300rwhp is just a starting point, then you should invest in an aftermarket block first thing. If all-motor 300rwhp is the end goal and you will be fine with that, then a top end kit from trick flow is probably your best bet.

yeah I love the new dart and ford racing boss blocks they can now get 360 c.i out of a 302 base motor, you use to be limited to 347c.i with 302 based, you would have to get a 351 windsor and bore / stroke to get to 360+ c.i . Love the new 360 strokers.

I wish I had the $ I would do the dart 360 or ford racing boss block 11 to 1 compression a nice set of those trickflow 11r heads, R intake a nice .650 lift cam. would be a beast on motor 550hp+ on motor alone

You can make over 320 rwhp with a stock shortblock, just not with the typical heads/cam/intake kits that the norm goes with. Of course, you will have to spend a little extra (if buying new), but good deals on used stuff can be had via the classifieds on other forums like Corral.

My fox made 310 rwhp with all trick flow parts and supporting mods on a stock short block. No tune as of yet. Car runs 12.80s at 3200lbs on drag radials
