What engine oil do you guys run? I currently use valvoline 10w40. Would it be beneficial to switch to a racing oil?

Oil type and weight is highly dependent on power level, driving type, and bearing clearances.

None of which, have you provided.

10-30 valvoline in the motor in the GT now but looking at running synthetic in the motor Im building now, think I'll go Royal Purple 5w-30. 5w due to the fact it will be used during the winter as a back up car and 30 due to the miles on the short block I'm using. Will see what kind of oil usage I'm getting and if it's more then I like ill try a 10-40 syn, better to start thin.

I did a lot of research and as far as oil "quality" goes, Amsoil seems to come out on top in that category.

Per the weights, I can't help you so much there.

clean oil is the best oil.
Amsoil, Royal Purpel are both great synhetics. But $$$$$ damn they're pricey. Sure you can go longer between oil changes and recoup some of the cost.
I use Castrol in all my cars. 95 Mustang- 240,000 miles origional motor, 99 Suburban- 250,000 miles origional motor, 89 toyota- changed the motor at 310,000 miles but not because or a worn out motor. For what ever reason it burnt a vlv and a getting a used freshly rebuilt motor was the same proce as rebuilding my head.
