yeah 265 is as wide as i'd go but i've seen people go with 275 nittos since nittos run small.

I have 275/40/17 in my rear. Bridgestone Potenza RE750 and they fit fine.

depends on what type of driving you do. If you do auto x I would stay away from 275's, too much bulge. If it's for bling, then go WIDE.

PRoblem is when you get too big, you start ballooning, esentually lose contact patch, and have crappy tread wear.

would moving from 45s to 40s make the tires look too small?

I would think it would look smaller. you are reducing the sidewall. As for it being TOO small? got me.

I would love to have a set of those rims chrome. Or the 99-04 ones I have in Chrome. I like looking stock so people think thats all it is... Is a stock stang then give them hell.

275/40's are stock on 17x9 cobras(my 03 cobra wheels)....the sidewall is perfect.....granted they are a wider wheel than your 17x8s, but the sidewall won't be much smaller. Be careful with that bulge. (Says the guy with 315's on his 17x9 cobras :D)
