Hey y'all,
I'm chase and I'm am currently building a 1999 GT. I asked for some engine help and they recommended I post here. I think in this initial intro post, I'll tell you my goals, plans, and show work (plans). Then, later, when I have the energy, I'll post the work that I've done so far, and my plans for next month.
I want to preface this by asking if you're going to comment, if trying to dissuade me from a certain choice, please explain why instead of just saying, "nope". I'm teaching myself, so my knowledge is super spotty, but there are certain things I do understand, and chose to make that choice on purpose. This is a passion build, and I want to build it for me. Please don't let this stop you from commenting and offering constructive criticism, I really want to learn and soak up as much as I can, because even if it doesn't apply to this build, or right now, it might be something I'm glad I heard in the future.
With that said, my plan for this car is a Japanese street drift car inspired build. What I mean by this is basically treating a street car like a race car, while retaining things that make street cars, street cars. Everything on the car will be touched. I want a car I can drive to the track, drive, and drive home, only needing to change tires. I would like ~400 horsepower, with more of an emphasis put on torque, reliability, and response. The philosophy behind this build is hot rod/rat rod. I will drive it hard and maintain it better. If it breaks, I'll hit a junkyard for smaller parts, with mostly an emphasis on preventative care, meaning buying quality parts as much as I can, especially where quality means place and forget. While my budget is tight, it'll be much tighter if I have to keep replacing the same parts breaking due to bad quality. I am willing and committed to doing the work, as I have time for labor, but a smaller budget. I want my car to be angry and violent, yet refined because of the quality of the work on the build.
I have already stripped everything behind the front seats in the interior, but I'll keep most things in front of them. I'm going to swap out the modular engine and it's trans for a 1995 302 h.o 5.0l and a T5. The 302 is going to have mods, which is what I got help with originally. I'm following the recommendation of a 119 11r head, holley systemax 2 heads, and I'm currently looking at cams. While swapping, I want to completely clean out, paint, and clean up the engine bay. After the engine and trans go in, with corresponding supporting work, I plan to finishing the suspension with a caster/camber plate, and start working on the interior.
My day job is designing and making clothes; and making art, so once the mechanical aspect of the car is done (I have already swapped the suspension on the front and the rear, Godspeed Mono SS), I will take apart the rest of the interior, put in racing seats with custom apolostery, roll cage, custom harnesses, custom carpets, and paint the interior.
Next, In terms of exhaust, I like the sound from an h-pipe, but I'm not super knowledgable in exhausts. Then, get aero (which I'm sure you'll all hate haha which is totally okay, it makes me smile), and will be mixing an r34 gtr bumper cover with the mustang front bumper cover to give it more of a boxy, aggressive stance (see attached photos).
Once that's done, I will go to paint the exterior. The car will be a solid color, wanting to do a red so crimson it looks black unless it's under lights, while the hood and trunk deck lid will have a custom paint job, which I can put on and remove and replace with a set that is paint matched to the car.
After that, I want to do a once over the car, which means retreading every step and making sure that everything is buttoned up, bolts to wires to piping to brake pads. That's when I'll feel like the car is done.
There's stupid shit I'd like to add in the future, like making a bracket and motor system for the small windows behind the ones the already roll down, so I can roll them up and down like the !950's and 1960's cars, custom dash (I've been learning how to "plastic weld"), ability to modulate how loud the exhaust is, etc. But I need a finishline for now.
I guess i'll add I want to get into welding and fabrication, as it'll allow me more freedom to do dumb custom shit I like in the future. I also don't mind wiring or doing simple, yet hard, work. If there's any books I should read to improve my knowledge, please let me know. So far I've read George Reid's, "How to build a small block ford", and am currently working through, "race car vehicle dynamics", by Douglas and william Miliken, but it's THICK.
