Hey y'all,

I'm chase and I'm am currently building a 1999 GT. I asked for some engine help and they recommended I post here. I think in this initial intro post, I'll tell you my goals, plans, and show work (plans). Then, later, when I have the energy, I'll post the work that I've done so far, and my plans for next month.

I want to preface this by asking if you're going to comment, if trying to dissuade me from a certain choice, please explain why instead of just saying, "nope". I'm teaching myself, so my knowledge is super spotty, but there are certain things I do understand, and chose to make that choice on purpose. This is a passion build, and I want to build it for me. Please don't let this stop you from commenting and offering constructive criticism, I really want to learn and soak up as much as I can, because even if it doesn't apply to this build, or right now, it might be something I'm glad I heard in the future.

With that said, my plan for this car is a Japanese street drift car inspired build. What I mean by this is basically treating a street car like a race car, while retaining things that make street cars, street cars. Everything on the car will be touched. I want a car I can drive to the track, drive, and drive home, only needing to change tires. I would like ~400 horsepower, with more of an emphasis put on torque, reliability, and response. The philosophy behind this build is hot rod/rat rod. I will drive it hard and maintain it better. If it breaks, I'll hit a junkyard for smaller parts, with mostly an emphasis on preventative care, meaning buying quality parts as much as I can, especially where quality means place and forget. While my budget is tight, it'll be much tighter if I have to keep replacing the same parts breaking due to bad quality. I am willing and committed to doing the work, as I have time for labor, but a smaller budget. I want my car to be angry and violent, yet refined because of the quality of the work on the build.

I have already stripped everything behind the front seats in the interior, but I'll keep most things in front of them. I'm going to swap out the modular engine and it's trans for a 1995 302 h.o 5.0l and a T5. The 302 is going to have mods, which is what I got help with originally. I'm following the recommendation of a 119 11r head, holley systemax 2 heads, and I'm currently looking at cams. While swapping, I want to completely clean out, paint, and clean up the engine bay. After the engine and trans go in, with corresponding supporting work, I plan to finishing the suspension with a caster/camber plate, and start working on the interior.

My day job is designing and making clothes; and making art, so once the mechanical aspect of the car is done (I have already swapped the suspension on the front and the rear, Godspeed Mono SS), I will take apart the rest of the interior, put in racing seats with custom apolostery, roll cage, custom harnesses, custom carpets, and paint the interior.

Next, In terms of exhaust, I like the sound from an h-pipe, but I'm not super knowledgable in exhausts. Then, get aero (which I'm sure you'll all hate haha which is totally okay, it makes me smile), and will be mixing an r34 gtr bumper cover with the mustang front bumper cover to give it more of a boxy, aggressive stance (see attached photos).

Once that's done, I will go to paint the exterior. The car will be a solid color, wanting to do a red so crimson it looks black unless it's under lights, while the hood and trunk deck lid will have a custom paint job, which I can put on and remove and replace with a set that is paint matched to the car.

After that, I want to do a once over the car, which means retreading every step and making sure that everything is buttoned up, bolts to wires to piping to brake pads. That's when I'll feel like the car is done.

There's stupid shit I'd like to add in the future, like making a bracket and motor system for the small windows behind the ones the already roll down, so I can roll them up and down like the !950's and 1960's cars, custom dash (I've been learning how to "plastic weld"), ability to modulate how loud the exhaust is, etc. But I need a finishline for now.

I guess i'll add I want to get into welding and fabrication, as it'll allow me more freedom to do dumb custom shit I like in the future. I also don't mind wiring or doing simple, yet hard, work. If there's any books I should read to improve my knowledge, please let me know. So far I've read George Reid's, "How to build a small block ford", and am currently working through, "race car vehicle dynamics", by Douglas and william Miliken, but it's THICK.

Okay,

finally got a plan down with most parts covered. Now it's about saving. Since I know that now, I'm starting on the interior. I realized it'll be more saving than I intially thought, so I've started the sanding process.

I also realized I am an idiot, and should probably strip the paint first lollll so here's what I've got so far. Before and after stripping glue, and after a couple hours of sanding. I am going to head to get some paint stripper, a brush, etc and get back to work.

Back to it

Spent a lot of time sanding, started to make real progress. Yesterday, I took out and put back in the interior so I could take the carpet out. Today I'm cutting the carpet up to make a pattern so I can make a custom carpet. I have a question if anyone has time to answer.

I heard you can use a hot heat gun and tar remover to get the sound deadening off; supposedly cheaper than dry ice. Is this actually true?

Other than that, I've just been steading working on sanding haha not glorious work but it feels like it's making pretty big changes.

welp,

I made enough money selling clothes to be able to afford engine parts sooner than expected. I wanted to put my plan on here for help haha the plan is;

- TFS Stage 1 Camshaft SBF Ford 302 351w

- Trick Flow® Twisted Wedge® 11R 190 Cylinder Heads

and

- Holley SysteMAX II Intake

Saw the cam when doing research, specifically on a youtube called, "engine labs." If anyone has any other options, let me know :) going to buy things on thursday to give myself a couple more days of looking.

I also continued to work on the interior. Sanding is slow, frustrating work that is also satisfying.

Hey Y'all

Still alive! Been a while haha but I have been working :) I Got a bunch done but I'm also hit a wall and would love advice/help.

Full mod list so far (I think):
-quick release steering hub
-short throw shifter
-bumpsteer kit
-coilovers (Front)
-caster/camber plates
-coilovers (rear)
-Upgraded lower shock mounts

Aesthetic:
-Vintage steering wheel
-front lower cabin stripped, sanded, and painted
-Custom pony hair leather carpet (By me)

I'll add pics soon, just kinda overwhelmed with my current conundrum, will post that where appropriate.

My question is I kinda feel like, what's next? Not because I'm close to done, but I'm not sure, I just feel a bit lost.
Things I want to complete are:
-302 swap
-strip, sand, and paint entire interior
-re-do wiring to it clean up
-strip, sand, organize, and paint engine bay
-replace hangers under car
-strip, sand, paint car

I kind of feel overwhelmed by options, and like order? I'm a lil autistic, and order/efficiency matters to me, and I feel like I've tapped out my knowledge haha I also moved to oregon, so If there's any sn95 whisperers near Eugene that I could trade manual labor or sewing for knowledge, please reach out.

Nice build man. It’s your car do as you please but I think you’ll run into issues when swapping the motor and associated hardware. You’ll need a k member and exhaust for one. Then you’ll need an ecu, whether you go with a factory 94-95 gt ecu and wiring harness or aftermarket ecu is a big decision. Then you have to see whether you can use the stock gauge cluster or have to go custom and if you want to retain ac or not.

I think you have most of the bigger things sorted out but there’s still a lot of things to consider. I personally would stick with the 4.6 to keep it easy but it’s your build.

Hey! thanks :) The 302 is 100% going in. Pardon my stubbornness but it matters to me haha I have an engine and k-member rn. I was planning on going stock gauge cluster (I was just planning on painting/adding different lights) and I would like to keep A/C, keeps it street car in my head. The wiring harness is a great question actually. I was hoping to add/remove certain things from the wiring harness (add Interior/exterior led lights with buttons, removing stock overhead lights, etc). Since I was planning on swapping the engine, I thought I would do a custom ecu and wiring harness. I have a 1999 mustang gt shop manual, with the wiring harness diagram. It seems scary but also straight forward, but that's from watching youtube videos, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

the kind where the wheels are hanging in the air for too long, sitting on jackstands unfortunately. I had an electrical fire and then while trying to repair it had some personal health issues that just as I got over then my folks started to have health issues. Seems like since then one of us is always down preventing me from getting into it at the moment dad is limping into physical therapy and I am helping take care of him and mom when not taking care of my own issues.

With the amount of customization you’re doing I’d recommend a Holley ecu and the Holley dash. I think trying to Frankenstein your wiring harness will be way more of a hassle than it’s worth. Then you’ll need 94-95 gt ac components if you want to keep ac.

Interesting build you got here. Im for sure watching this one come around. There are a few aftermarket ECU companies that support the ford windsor platform and could make the swap alot easier and alot less painful. Holley being one of them. I agree with others when they say just stick to what the car has and roll with it, which would reduce the cars downtime considerably, but I also understand your direction. You would most definitely fair looking for a 5.0l K-member. Again the aftermarket support for race proven K-members are out there and stock 5.0l Kmembers as well like found on MarketPlace. I just did a quick search for Kmember and got alot of options close to me here in Ky, so I would imagine you could find something close to where you live as well.

That probably feels super overwhelming. I'm sorry you're experiencing, "when it rains, it pours". I have pretty serious mental health issues, so I understand how quickly health issues that can kill any momentum and how it can cause way more difficulty getting the ball rolling again, so I have a lot of empathy for you. Stacking family shit on top of that must be crazy. The beautiful and awful thing about life is that time passes. The same way things have been good and stable before, will happen again. Obviously you know that, and it doesn't do a lot in the middle of the storm, but hopefully being reminded by an exterior voice and holding onto it can help take a little edge of the pain. Be patient and kind with yourself when life isn't haha cause you're worth it.

Thank you. It's been a pretty lonely journey so far, so I actually really appreciate the validation of the work :) I'm going to do some dedicated research into aftermarket ecu's, the prices looked higher than I was used to when I first started, but over time I saved, and actually understand part prices now, so I think that'll take away a lot of sticker shock. January 2025 was the first time I really touched a car in any working capacity, esp. mechanically and not just interior, so I've learned a lot since the early months.
I hear you, and everyone, in terms of keeping the 4.6l. I hope that's clear. I appreciate that y'all care enough to really help. I think I've said this before somewhere, but I was actually "building" a 1995 in 2024. It was a complete shell, like literally nothing, and I had the idea I was going to build it....Anyways, I was compiling parts with the little money I had while I was waiting for my disability application to get accepted. Long story short, I got scammed for the rest of my money over a T5, and with all the mental stuff, I broke. That's why this engine is so important. It's representative of the suffering I went through, and survived alive. Not only that, a mustang parts reseller on instagram sold it to me the day he pulled it, and hadn't checked forge codes. It ended up being a 95 cobra engine, and it just felt like a big break after what felt like a tsunami of the opposite. That 1995 was 100% the only thing that kept me alive for a year of basically complete isolation. I'm not saying this for pity, or just for you. This is the build thread, and it'll be easier to just have it out somewhere here haha.
In terms of k-members, junkyard/aftermarket parts availabiity is such a fantastic aspect of owning a mustang. There are a bunch here as well.
I do have a question about transmissions. I saw that T5's were in the v6's until 04, I think? Have you, or anyone, paired those with 302 5.0l's with more than stock power? I feel like those would be easier to find, but if it's not going to work, i'd rather know. I think I remember hearing about having to swap bell housings? Sorry for the vague memory lollllll

pics of previous progress; whole hide, pony hair leather carpet, 100% handmade by me. This was the worst part and took 2 weeks. Shifting scraps made me lose my mind. I am so happy though.
