I have a 96 gt with about 65k miles and one day the transmission started to act up and not shift out of 1st by its self, but if I put it in 2 it will work fine until about 3k rpm and after that it just revs out like it’s in neutral but 3 and 4 both work fine. I replaced the shift solenoids and the 1-2 shift accumulator spring and piston but it’s still doing the same thing. It’s drivable but it’s tedious and not fun to drive anymore. I’m tempted to just buy a junk 4r70w to get it over with.

Your year has the older mlps (manual lever position sensor or neutral safety switch) that’s suseptable to water intrusion. Pull the harness to see if there’s water in the harness. If there is, replace it with a 98+ mlps.

Here is an article about how to adjust it. A misaligned mlps could cause strange issues as well

I took the mlps off. There was a lot of
corrosion so I ordered a new one. Will see if it helps.

I replaced the mlps and it’s doing the exact same thing.could it be the output shaft sensor?

I don’t believe that year has an oss sensor. Is it throwing any codes? Did you align the mlps?

No codes and yes I did align it in neutral.
It’s good on fluid right? Another idea is a sticking valve body or missing checkball. I once had a 98 crown Vic that would skip 2nd gear. It would rev out 1st then drop into third. I couldn’t figure it out and when I asked a 4r rebuilder he said it was the one way clutch. I put some seafoam transmission cleaner (I know, I never really use stuff like that but I figured what’s the worst that can happen) and after a few miles 2nd gear miraculously reappeared and it shifted normally for years afterwards.

I’m pretty positive that it is an electrical issue but I don’t want to spend 300 on a harness.is it hard to replace?

I honestly don’t know. Though I can’t say for certain it isn’t an electrical issue, usually if that were the case the ecu will throw codes.

Also forgot to mention after installing the new mlps it doesn’t start in park and only starts in neutral.I have no idea what’s going on lol.

If you wiggle the shifter in park will it crank? I know you said you did but that sounds like a misaligned mlps.

It’s very random sometimes it will start and sometimes I have to put it in neutral.I’m thinking it’s the harness because the mlps is lined up perfectly and it’s still acting up.

I meant the mlps, it could be bad out of the box. Did you check the other transmission harness for signs of water intrusion as well?

I also have auto, I had an issue where it wouldn't shift out of 2nd. I thought it was 1st gear but it would start at 2nd gear and be always in 2nd. Sometimes tranny would work normally but then go back to 2nd on the highway.. scary stuff.
It was the neutral safety switch or throttle position sensor which is a $75 part and has to be replaced while the car is in neutral. a shop did it for $100 labor
maybe worth a try.

I believe that’s the mlps I replaced
