So with winter approaching and the cold weather already here, I sink into the computer chair way more than normal. I am beginning to realize that my PC is starting to date itself. It was a complete beast when I built it but that was like 4yrs ago. I've always been able to max out everything on 1920x1080 until recently with BF4 and Crysis3 and it drives me nuts.

My problem: I've been out of the PC scene for way too long and couldn't tell ya anything about what's out there now. I have no problem doing the research to get back on top of things, but I'd like to know any and all suggestions you "hot rod" PC guys have.

EDIT: I'm sticking with Intel, just figured I'd get that out of the way. Also, I like EVGA products, they've always performed great for my uses and haven't ever had any complaints.

    My build right now:

    - EVGA X58 SLI3 board
    - Core i7 950 @ 4.2ghz
    - CoolerMaster V8 heatsink
    - 2xSLI EVGA GTX465 cards
    - X-fi Fatality Titanium sound card
    - Patriot Viper II 12GB DDR3 ram
    - 650w ThermalTake PSU

That's some good info except for the liquid cooling. I've never been into it.

Maybe I just need to upgrade my GPUs. Otherwise it's not THAT much different than my setup.

I'm surprised no one has poped in and said "why not buy a Mac :handz:"

Your power supply might not be enough for some of those high end video cards. They vid card manufacturers typically recommend PS needed. Too little power and odd issues occur with gaming. I helped my son last year build his gaming PC around an Intel i7 and he is doing well on Counter Strike Source.

Better PSU and a couple 760s or one 780 and you'll be doing just fine with what you've already got. Toss in a SSD too while you're at it for a system/game drive and you'll see an enormous boost just from that by itself.

I built a tower that can handle just about any game out, and spent around $700 on it. I don't really play games anymore, but I needed to upgrade for school. So why not spend $700 for a gaming tower rather than spending $1000 on a store bought tower that can't handle that. It has all the fancy lights, and fans.

On that site, you can find other computers that people have built, and how much they payed for them.

If you want to catch up on what's current, I remember using these two sites quite a bit for my build last year:

http://www.logicalincrements.com/ to make sure my build was appropriately balanced.

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/ because I wasn't looking to build a monster, and that helped to put bang-for-your-buck into perspective.

I am very happy with what has resulted. I hit my budget on the nose, and have been thrilled with performance. Holiday sales are coming so if you really want some deals, do your research and find those bundles! Unfortunately, if you're picky, you may have to spend some extra coin to get what you really want.

Agreed, I would upgrade if needed. When I get a new card(s) I'll be upgrading to a 1000wt.

Agreed, that's the route I've been leaning towards after doing some more research today.

Thanks for the link, great info.

Wow, I completely forgot about that site, thanks.

    I have mine OC'd to 7ghz without a heatsink.

I've seen multiple P4s get hot enough (usually Dells with aluminum heat sinks that have been stopped up with dust) that the melt into the heatsink and the ink on the processor that spells out the model info, etc. gets transferred over to the heatsink...
