Hi all,
I have three different options for transmissions to put behind the 351w that is going in my '98 Mustang.

4R70W
  • Silverfox SPT-4R MVB - $500
  • Baumann Electronics Mechanical Diode Kit - $150
  • Performance Automatic 28 oz. 164 toot SFI flexplate - $180
  • Performance Automatic 2400 Stall Torque Converter - $600
  • Total: $1430
C6
  • Broader Performance Rebuild Kit
  • B&M Racing 2000 Stall Torque Converter
  • Performance Automatic 28 oz. 164 toot SFI flexplate - $180
  • Total : $180 - own everything else
C4

  • C4 Transmission - $?
  • Performance Automatic 2500 Stall Torque Converter - $490
  • Performance Automatic C4 RMVB - $410
  • Performance Automatic C4 Pro Max Rebuild Kit - $330 (if needed)
  • SVE Driveshaft Spacer - $50
  • Total: $1230?
All transmissions will be mounted on a Stifflers tubular cross member and be paired with a B&M Racing Stacked Plate Transmission Cooler. 8.8" rear as 3.55:1 gears and will be on 26.4" tall tires. I plan on doing some bracket racing as well as drag week/power tour but it won't see a whole lot of street time overall. Any tips and pointers as to which I should run are gladly appreciated.

I'm always about having an overdrive. But then I expect anything I own to be able to keep up with traffic in California. So that means at least 75mph on the freeway. My opinion is skip the C6. Can handle power, but it's heavy. C4 is decent and came in a ton of cars. But you have to make sure you get one that was made after a certain year. I had one out of a 65 Mustang that didn't have the normal D-2-1. It had D-"snow start"-1. In snow start it started in second gear. So there was no manual shifting with that one. Unless I changed the valve body I think.

If it was me I'd go with the 4R70W. I've seen those in turbo Cobras handing decent power. And you'll appreciate the extra gear on the Power Tour.

Just my opinion on things.

I prefer to have an overdrive myself too. Though a $200 option would be highly more appealing option.

Will the 4R70W bolt up to the Windsor engines? Is there a bellhousing available for that to happen?

From what ive seen and what works the best is using a chevy turbo 350 or 400 transmission. Plenty of parts. When built can handle extreme amounts of power. Strong following. Can be adapted to just about anything.

Yuck!! Chevy transmissions! You’re out of your mind! Lol. Th350 and 400 are great transmissions but still only have 3 gears. Overdrive is nice, and the 4r70w that is bolted to the 3.8 v6’s will bolt up to your Windsor engine because they share the same pattern.

Thank you all for your input. I think I am leaning towards keeping the 4r70w I currently have behind the 3.8 in the car now. Since the stock converters have a slightly higher stall (I believe 2300-2700) do you think it would be a good idea to keep the stock converter for now?

If that'll work with your set up I would. Then down the road you can look into an aftermarket converter to fine tune your set up.
