In my infinite search for an SN95 I've seen a few convertibles for a good price but they need a new top. On average, how much would I be looking at to have the top replaced? Honestly I would prefer a coupe but if I can land a good deal on a 'vert I'd be in.
That is completely dependent on how much an auto upholstery/convertible repair shop charges in your area. I've heard of people paying as low as $500 and upwards of $1.5K. Call around and get a quote and see if that's really the route you want to take. Luckily my convertible top had been replaced a year prior to buying my car so I didn't have to deal with the headache of replacing it (knock on wood).
I paid @ $1000 total for parts and labor when I had mine replaced a few years back. Cost will depend on the top you choose and rear glass defroster option etc. Next time mine needs to be replaced I will go with the 03/04 Cobra cloth top.
