After the back half was done I shuffled things around and got the truck picked up and supported so I could start tearing it down.

New radius arm install was easy. They mount using an existing hole in the frame then you drill the 3 in the side.

Instructions for the front kit say to remove some material from the auxiliary shock mount and the coil spring perch. A band saw made that a breeze.

I did clean them all up and painted them before install. The underside of the spring perches had to be clearanced to fit flush on top of the beams. Since the radius arms no longer rest on top of the beams, the spring perch has to sit lower which causes them to contact the beam towards the knuckle. I’ll get pics of how they sit after clearancing before I’m done.

Here we are now. All of the front suspension and steering parts are in but not everything is tight. I’ll have lots of adjustments to make once I start trying to dial in the alignment. Once I get the differential back in I can throw in the axles and hub/rotor/brakes etc and finally sit it back down. Progress kinda slowed down a bit over the weekend but I spent a lot of time cleaning all of the components and giving everything a fresh coat of paint before going back on. I replaced the ball joints in this set of knuckles and removed some from another set of spare knuckles I had in storage. Also picked up some fresh hardware for some of the brackets and things to match the rest of the new parts.

I'm looking forward to updates on this more than other builds at the moment lol. Nice work
Haha thanks dude! It's back on all 4 now but still a little way to go. The alignment is way off, mostly toed in like crazy so I'll be working on that some this weekend. Brakes need to be bled, diff fluid refilled, gotta cycle the suspension and figure where to attach my limit straps to the frame, nut/bolt check everything etc etc. Hopefully will get to drive it by the end of the weekend.

Small update. After the last post I had some help getting the diff back in and then was able to install the axles and hubs etc then put it back on the ground. In doing so I found there was some slack in the passenger side that didn't sit well with me so I tore it back apart and found that a couple threads at the base of the spindle were jacked up and not allowing the bearing to seat fully. Luckily I had spare spindles and was able to rebuild one and get everything back together. During that process the passenger side locking hub got damaged so both hubs (mile marker) are being replaced with new Warn locking hubs, picking those up this evening.

During this time Desolate had also announced they were in need of core parts after being wiped out from the sale volume, so I sent in 2 sets of core beams and was rewarded $740 in store credit which I used to get a radius arm crossmember and a set of their fabricated shackle hangers and some isolators for the coil springs. The cross member is a simple bolt-on to the radius arm brackets to keep them from trying to flex inward and warp the frame, so that will be a quick install. Hangers will be a little more involved with knocking the old rivets out of the frame but should go fairly quick too I hope. New parts should be here next week then hopefully I can get this finished up and out of the shop.

Update time for this one too. Basically just got lazy and haven’t felt like posting to any of my build threads until I have a backlog of photos and info to dump lol. Here goes.

New fabricated hangers, coil spring isolators and radius arm cross support. The hangers lower the pivot point of the shackle for a little more articulation, radius arm support is designed to keep the frame rails from flexing inward under stress.

In the next photo you can see where the soring perches had to be clearanced some on the bottom side to avoid contacting the top side of the beam.

IMG_9034.jpeg

Everything back together and limit straps bolted in place.

Umm, another pic of the hangers because why not. They’re beautiful.

IMG_9086.jpeg

I tried to use a metabo to zip the heads off the rivets for about 15 seconds before I decided I liked the way my face looks without a blade sticking out of it, so I used a sawzall instead which was muuuuch easier. Then popped the rivets out with an air hammer and a little touch of heat.

With everything back together here is the rear end at full droop.

I currently have the stock rear bumper on, but I don’t like it. It has a bit of a warp on one side that I’ve tried to straighten out but it’s still there and bugs me. Also the top of the bumper feels a little flimsy when you step on it. I haven’t made a decision yet because I haven’t shopped around for bumpers very much but Desolate offers a low profile rear bumper that I like so I may eventually replace mine with theirs.

Some more in the wild shots and then I’ll start to fill in all the nitty gritty shitty details that have developed along the way.

Now here comes the bs. To start with, I fought this thing for about a month and a half trying to get the right parts. I had some complications while putting the front suspension back together which resulted in a locking hub being destroyed, and it took about 2 weeks to finally get the right ones. Then fought for another week scratching my head when the hub still would not seat fully on one side. In the end I realized I had two seals between the knuckle and spindle by accident and it was pushing the axle further into the diff and I could not put the snap rings on the outside of the axle shaft. Once I finally noticed he extra seal everything went back together smooth as butter. This was AFTER rebuilding a spare set of spindles I had with new bearings and seals, because I thought that maybe the threads were damaged and not letting the wheel bearings seat fully when I tried to tighten and torque the spindle lock nuts. That was a very confusing and frustrating period to say the least, I think I had the front pulled apart 3 maybe 4x trying to figure out wth was going on. After that was over I was able to start test driving it and making some little alignment tweaks. I still have not taken it to a shop for an alignment check but I have it close enough that it hasn’t stopped me from blasting around on some dirt roads in the meantime.

Once all of the suspension woes were behind me it was time to address a few other things. My driver door had started sagging and I figured it was time to replace the pins and bushings. I grabbed some replacements from the parts store and found out very quickly how cheap they are. Took those back and grabbed a better quality set from LMR and all was going well until I was pressing the last pin back in and one of the bushings exploded. So I still have not gotten the doors situated and still have to roll the window down and open it from the outside. It’s aggravating but it ain’t stoping me from driving it so I’ll eventually either fix them for good or just replace the hinges completely.

Next issue was to try and get rid of a CEL that was related to the EGR. This also took about 2 weeks to finally get the correct part and it also had to be ordered from LMR.

IMG_9176.jpeg

To my surprise the new EGR valve got rid of the CEL and the truck seemed to act a little better too. Wellll that lasted until a week ago and now I have a CEL again but haven’t checked to see what code it’s throwing this time. So as it sits now I just need to scan it and see what needs to be fixed, take it for an alignment, and fix my doors.

As for my thoughts on the new suspension, I love it! The ride quality is amazing compared to the stock/leveled setup before. The longer radius arms make a world of difference driving across uneven terrain and the ride is just a lot smoother overall. It took a bit of getting used to the lack of a sway bar up front but now that I am used to it I prefer it vs having a front sway bar. I’ve mostly driven it on dirt roads close to home but did venture out to a friends house once where the roads were a mix of dirt/highway/dirt again and it handles great on the asphalt too. I even beat on it a little on one occasion and pushed it kinda hard thru some curvy backroads and it took everything I threw at it like a champ. With all that being said though, I still really wish I’d have been able to afford a long travel setup with coilovers and eventually I will either swap this truck over or if I get rid of this one the next one I build will run that setup. But for the everyday driver that wants a lift with a good stance that is very capable off-road as well this is the ticket I think.
