So this is the next project I have been considering and actually the last(for the moment) - rear fender flares... I have never done this before but then again I never did the engine bay smoothing, deck lid smoothing, shaving handles/custom handles either so I thought I would try it out on my parts car too get a small taste of it before cutting my car. I would like to try and squeeze a 1/2"-3/8" flare in hopes I can tuck a 19" x 11" back there for giggles. Make no mistake about it this is a function follows form time, its really just about the looks as well as to challenge myself and do something else cool.

This is with a 1/2" flare and a 2" drop to help it blend in. With a little filler I would hope to try and smooth it in to where it really isn't that noticeable, until you notice...

So do you like it? Hate it? Flare it more/less?! make a longer piece of cardboard to draw it out longer? I kind of want to cut down a little further up front and in back. Realistically it will not show up much down there but would allow me to pull it out a littler further if I wanted/need or would just make the transition longer/smoother.

What do ya think(yes I know the parts car tire is flat/bald:) ) ?

I think a flare would look great but also really like how they look just pulled. I feel like with the big smooth round fenders it fits best

Also need to imagine the gaps between the brake vent/fender filled and side exhaust skirts.

The more bondo you put on your car, the less I'm liking it.

I'd lean more towards pulling the fender out... But it would be interesting to see the fender pulled out a bit AND like a 1/3" flare...

If it does not follow the rear bumper, it will look horrible. Also, anything less than an inch is hardly a flare.

Pulling the fender a massive amount like that red car is probably your best bet.

The "pulled" look is basically what I am going for. I don't think you realize how hard it would be to shape the stock metal like that with the way it meets the body on the top of the fender. I am going to cut the stock material out and put mine on top to get the same basic look only not as drastic. I agree that its a minor flare but I honestly really do not like how obvious the red one looks myself. That almost looks like the start of a wart to me I am looking for a much more subtle look to the flare, hardly noticeable really... Just took another look at it outside and I think I definitely need to come down on both sides more. Pretty sure with the way the back bumper mounts to the fender that it will blend into a small flare with no problem and in the front I can just blend the curve into the vent.

The majority of people don't like fender flares.. Most times they look decent IMHO. But with the amount of custom touches you've added already, you have the skill and talent to really make the flares work and pop. Imo, try flaring the flares out a touch more than normal ones. Compare it to looking at the S281 wing from the side, its flat and angles up. But in the case with the flares, its round, but make it flare out longer in the middle.

can't agree more, I think its a go... I will bring the sides down further front/back, go for 3/8" out and bring the very top of the flare up another inch or so.

I thought about it enough to get some body work hammers/dollies and actually look up under it and that "pull" on the red one if it is all body work, it was a lot of work. At that point I could understand why he picked the wheels he did, in fer a penny he is in for a pound....

The real cutting has begun! I also decide it had been too long since I had my gopro's out so I set them up to catch the action. I also thought of what I hope will be a better way to make a template for the metal that I have to cut and should be able to use it on the other side to make sure it matches.

Started off today by marking where I wanted my first cut and then from there I made the cut. I will spar you the repeat as its the exact same thing I did on the red car yesterday. I pulled it out just over 1/2" now and will need to weld a small piece in to hold it at the 3/8" I am going for but I am not far here. I used a good amount of tape to make the template that I needed to cut out of metal by laying it out, marking where I wanted to cut it and then using a knife to cut it out. This is close to how I hop it will look although the metal will have some bend to it and not be straight like the tape.

after this point I just cut it out with a knife and stuck that to the metal, traced around it and then cut it out and into smaller pieces. These have not been fit much at all really just cut out with the saw and stuck up to see where I am at. With some time on the grinder/file I will get them to fit much tighter.

So there is a lot of fine trimming to come, followed by some welding but I think it will work and look the way I want it too.

The back of that car looks pretty sweet.
If you blend int out right it will look good IMO. accents the wide flare of the rear quarter.

not my cup of tea, looks like a new edge flare.
What I meant about the pull is a uniform looooong extension to make a really fat ass. i think a flare will add body line.

I'm sure you'll make me eat my words and make it look good though.
