After not finding any oem steering wheels out there whatsoever for our mustangs in good shape, I decided to take a whack at doing it myself. A couple weeks later, and several hours of stitching later, I am finally done!

I started by getting a junkyard steering wheel from a 94 Tbird that was *almost* the same as ours, just that the location of the horn switches were slightly off.

Took the old cover off of the junkyard wheel to experiment, and ironed it out and used it as a basic pattern to work from. For the new leather, I found a good place in phx that supplies special UV-treated leather for cars. Selected just plain black leather with a nice little grain. Also bought a 4 mm leather punch and some heavy duty waxed thread for the holes.

Made a pattern, stitched up the bottom and stretched her on!

After several hours of painfully hard stitching, it's done!

All I can say is that I'm impressed! Great work, that had to take a great deal of patience

Not at all! Especially doing it once, I think I could do it a lot easier next time. I had to redo a couple of areas where the leather was cut a bit short, but still its the sort of thing where the more work you put into it the better you can get it to look

If I sent you a steering wheel, plane and ready for wrapping, could you do it in alcantara? I would pay of course...

I wish I could! I'm just a college student and I hardly have any free time... However I have the old wrapping off of my old wheel and would gladly send you patterns if you are trying to do something along the same lines! Getting the pattern correct is one of the hardest parts. I'm sure working with alcantara would be a lot easier than leather as well.

But alas I haven't ever picked up a thread and needle so I don't believe it would turn out well..

I'd be interested in a pattern if you do a couple.

you realize his old pattern is nothing more then the old leather taken off of his wheel right? 30-45 mins with a razor blade to cut the one off of yours you will need to remove prior to re-covering anyway and you have your pattern in your hands.

That may be true, but depending on how bad your old leather is, it's very difficult to get all the old adhesive off to keep it flat enough to get a good pattern. Also, with a pattern, you can start working on your steering wheel cover without taking your car out of service. Ill try to digitize the pattern and post it later this week!

Great job! I think I might have to get a pattern and get the wife to help out, a lot better with a needle and thread then I could ever be.
