firing problem

So I recently got my car put back together I turn the car to #1 TDC wired the wired out of the 94-98 mustang manual I have went to start and it wont start. Sometimes it will backfire and shoot flames. Any suggestions? on what could be wrong, I know I have fuel and spark, checked all the connections too they are fine.

TDC on the compression stroke is where you want to be. Sounds like you may be TDC on the exhaust stroke.

You sure your going the right direction with your plugs on the distributor? I made that mistake once. Also double check they're on the correct contact pins.
