Hello All. Steve from near Atlanta here. I've got a '66 'Stang that I really enjoy, but I am considering selling it to get a 94-98 Cobra (or GT for that matter). I don't want a Hot Rod. Want a stock, low mileage (under 100K) car. I see a LOT of modded cars. Isn't the stock car pretty fun? I understand the 4.6 isn't all that stout but what if a guy doesn't want to race(?), is it a decent ride just for tooling? What to beware of? Thanks.

I agree Deep, as far as my experience. But that is limited to a '96 Crown Vic and my F-150. Never had one in a Mustang. But with so many being modified it stands to reason that very many owners aren't satisfied with the performance. And what IS UP with 'the odometer quit at xx,xxx miles'!!?? It seems like half of the cars for sale have this malady!

Not necessarily. They're heavily modified because people just want to go faster... human nature.

That's an issue with the older mechanical odometers and the gears wearing out. It's not a problem on the newer cars with the digital odometers.

What I've read is that even the 'soft' '96's have sub-7 second 0-60 times and around 14 flat 1/4's in the low 90's. Is that accurate?

Welcome to the forum! If you plan to keep it stock, you'd probably be happier with a cobra.

Mustangs are modified because they're mustangs. Its sort of the whole point of owning a mustang.

If you could see my '66 you'd know I share your view. But nice to start with an unmolested car and say, 'I did it my waaaaaayyyyy!'

Welcome aboard!
I can sympathize with you some, it's definitely nice not buying someone else's hackjob and having to figure out where they went wrong.

On my '66, I've added the big sway bar (anti-roll bar for the sticklers out there), quick ratio steering box, Scarebird disc brake swap, export brace, aluminum rad, dual-bowl master cylinder, tach, leather wrapped steering wheel, 16" Crown Victoria alloy wheels (cast in Italy for Ford). It is a beautiful car. The reason that I'm thinking of getting rid of it is that eventually it's going to need re-wired. Everything works but the insulation is brittle and there are a number of splices. Also, I want a stick and the car is currently an auto. It's just too nice of a car to start taking everything apart when there are probably a great number of people who would like it just as it is.

welcome to the madness
I'm also in ATL. Hampton to be more accurate. I also have a 66 coupe I-6 that I'm about to begine a revival on.
My 95gt is still stock engine wise and has 200,000+ miles and I still semi daily it.
In stock form it has 215hp and the 4.6 has the same through 97, 98 was 225hp and 99-04 is about 235hp. Cobra's are abouot 300hp.
We'd all like to see your 66.

Welcome to the site. The 4.6 is a great platform, a little low on power if pre-1999, but still fun regardless. I couldn't imagine owning a mustang and leaving it stock, it just doesn't seem very exciting. I like the 66. The BBS' look remarkably good on there.

Those are factory wheels from a 1997 Crown Vic (among other years). The centers even say 'Ford.' They will fit a SN95, too, I believe.

Ah, you're right. Didn't even realize they had no bolts. My bad lol. Still looks good on there.
