I only had to go 250 miles or so but I have to say it was a comfortable car to travel in and surprisingly stable in the pouring down rain that I passed through. Way more stable than my Foxes are in any type of inclement weather. 26.88 MPG running 81 MPG with the cruise set when the rain let me, 2500 RPM's most of the way.

You really got 26.88 mpg!? I have never tried a long drive in mine to see what I would get. In truth I have never even considered figuring it. But 26.88 seems pretty unbelievable.

26 mpg isn’t too unbelievable at all, I used to get 24-25 all the time in my 98. My buddy had a 97 and a 95 that both got 26 mpg on the highway. And the 95 had a carb swap with 4.56 gears.

I was pleasantly surprised with it for sure. Glad to know it's typical for the car and at the top of the normal range. That speaks to the general tune and health of the engine that it is running efficiently.

My 95 use to get around 26-27 on the highway even with me playing a little every now and then. The 5spd cars easily average well.

Old dinosaur windsor 5.0l could not ever reach the fuel efficiency of the more technically advanced modular engine. Heck... a third of the power gets consumed pushing rods!!! What a waste

Ive owned 5.0l vehicles.....weak muscle. Dont get me wrong. The engines are work horses, just not superior to the modular. Why, one could say the modulars design is everything the old pushrod wasnt cause the pushrod is intriguing to mommas boys that love men in tight shorts.

White will lose his shit over this conversation and this shouldn’t be in someone else’s thread

But if you haven’t actually owned and built a 5.0 sn then just leave your thoughts to be opinions. Let’s get back to the op’s topic since this is his thread.

There’s plenty of threads you can revive that are already all about the pushrod vs mod battle

Oof

For the sake of conversation, I routinely got 23-25 mpg from my ‘95 when it was still a daily driver. If I could keep my foot out of the throttle, that is.

I used to do a 130 mile commute in my 98 GT and would regularly get 26 mpg, it had 2.73 gears...

Uhm.....excuse me? My comments totally belong into a modular based sn95 platform thread!

Im a 4.6l modular guy and you being the pushrod guy, it only makes sense for me not to miss the opportunity to badger you a little. Especially when you make positive pushrod comments!

To the original poster...im sorry to highjack your thread.

To evil....im sorry if my badgering has bothered you. Push rod engines are great!

All in good fun now...come on!

No worries from me, I have both and was a push rod only guy until I bought this car. I have been pleasantly surprised with everything about it.

I haven't opened the rear end to do an oil change yet that's on the agenda just haven't got there yet but I think my rear gear is 3.08 or at least that's what the tag says.

Probably. My 96 was a 2.73. When hard driving, the car never made it to 4k rpm in 3rd gear. I swapped it out with a 3.55. Talk about night and day difference

I've got a set of 3.55's in the garage but since its my daughters car and plenty quick enough for a young driver, I'll keep it as it. If I was going to keep it for me, I'd probably swap them out but for her its good as it is.

I remember I swapped 3.73's into 98 GT and the MPG went up. I usually see 18mpg in the Cobra on long drives. I remember seeing mid 20's in my 01 when it had the aluminum big bore set up in it.
