Well I recently purchased a 1995 Mustang GT S 5.0. Well the car has a few issues. For one the car doesn't want to rev over 3k when driving or in nueteral and is very sluggish. No CEL or any codes are thrown and I have no clue what to do since this is my first mustang. Any help would be great. It has 140,xxx miles and Automatic transmission

It sounds like what my 1st 5.0 did after it jumped time. Mine had original timing gears/chain and it jumped a tooth. Lost almost all power above 3K.

Could be ignition as well, does it go to 3K and stays there like a rev limiter? Or just looses power and climbs slowly?

As step one, I would make sure you have the correct firing order and timing set to 10* BTDC.

If you're not sure how to check or time it, just ask.

OK, make sure the firing order is correct in the above pic. Ford has 2, HO and non-HO. People mix them up.

For the timing, do you have a light?

You will need a timing light. Mark the crank at 10* BTDC on the scale, scale is on the harmonic. Use whiteout, or a black sharpie.

Clamp the light sensor to the #1 plug wire, remove the spout (small connector under airbox), start car and point timing light at crank pointer just below alternator. Your mark should be light up by the timing light strobe. If not, you'll ave to loosen the distributor clamp bolt (just loose), then you can move distributor while watching the timing light marker.

^General idea.

Gonna check the fuel pump. Timing is in order, firing order is correct, MAF is ok. I think it has a vacuum leak

Drained the tank and put new 93 in it and revs up to 6k now. Shift linkage broke while I was at the light though so only have reverse now lol

If all that's happening at once I'd say the car just sat for a really long time. Time for a spring tune up! Especially while it's new to you, before you get too lazy.

Sounds dumb, but seafoam it. I've had the dumbest stuff fixed by seafoam. Just don't put it in your oil. Just half through a vacuum line and half in the tank. Otherwise, I'd start pulling plugs replacing wires if needed and looking for vacuum leaks.

^^ yes, that as well. I would do a complete tune-up to establish a baseline. Check the obvious first, such as the plug wires shorting against the headers, the wires are fully seated onto the plugs and the battery to engine and engine to chassis grounds are clean and tight. Don't forget the air filter.

When I rev it up it revs alot faster then with the old gas in it but it feels like its hitting rev limiter at 3.5K rpms
