Fitting filter to the cam covers

Hi all I’ve seen a few new edges now where people have removed the vacuum lines that go from the cam covers to the plenum and have fitted near there filters. Why is this?
Does this mod help the engine out, if so how ?
And if it is to do with stopping the oil going back into the intake wouldn’t a catch can be a better choice?

Three words: unmetered air leak.

Catch cans are okay if you want to have one, but don't have anything vented to the open air.

All incoming air needs to pass through the MAF.

NA, its a matter of preference. Some boosted cars find it much more necessary, depending on the setup.
