I have a 1999 mustang base manual, with 172K miles, the gears most of the time feel like they just wont go in,have to keep trying and try different gears until the target gears finally goes in. I am not sure if this could be the clutch disk itself that's bad, or what else I might have to check?

Try putting it in gear with the engine off. If it’s really easy all of a sudden, the problem is the clutch not releasing fully.

Some where along the years the mustang came with an easy adjust clutch pedal. Put your foot behind the clutch pedal and pull the pedal to you, then press the pedal down to the floor....iirc.

This right here!!! Do it a couple times. If you hear it click then it adjusted.
