I’m replacing the headliner in my 01 because I want it to match my interior and the one in it now is failing. What kind of adhesive do I use to get the cardboard to stick to the roof?

On a side note, I’m swapping the dash from one out of an 04 gt. Can I swap the entire harness as well? Some idiot tapped into the fuse box and burned up some of the fuse contacts.

gosh you are lucky that your fell out. I swear they used alien technology to glue mine in to the point that as I was pulling it I could see the metal of the roof flexing.

IIRC I put it back up with 3m super90. If you have not used a contact cement before then you will need to understand you don't just spray it on and then slap it up and it holds. What you want to do is spray it on the back of the headliner, then spray it on the bottom of the roof, then wait.... As the adhesive dries it will go from a very wet/liquid look and you want to wait till when you touch it it is still tachy/slightly wet and not completely dried out on both sides and THEN you put the two together. A heat gun can help as well.

I haven’t tried pulling the headliner yet, I’m going to pick it up later. That’s good to know about that adhesive I’ll pick some up today too.

If I was replacing a headliner, I'd do do some sound deadener in there.

That was another thought as well. I’ll definitely consider it. Any one brand better than another?

there are more than a few good brands but second skin is who I have been using for a number of years. You can catch it on sale from time to time if you get their B-stock quality that normally only has problems on the ends/edges which can be cut off easily and not much is wasted. They just have a fairly high quality final inspection and if it is not perfectly perfect they discount it but the b-stock is still good stuff.

I've used Noico sound deadener on the last couple cars. Works great, and its a good price too, on Amazon

I used Noico off Amazon when i did sound deadener in my Fox. It did make a significant difference in interior noise, but I did the entire car.

I did my headliner and used either 3M Super 77, or 3M Super 90 adhesive to stick the material to the backing board. I can't recall which I used but I beleive the difference is adhesion strenght. With fabric, you really don't need much.

Has held up for years, until I peeled it off and redid it in a different material.

This car is going to be a long term project for once lol. I’m going to do some sound deadening under the headliner then once I remove the rear sets I’ll put some down there too. Probably do the rest of the car too when the time comes to pull the carpet.

be sure to clean the area well before applying it. Being on the roof if it is not properly applied a hot day can cause it to droop/fall.

at a minimum just a soap water solution, if you want to go the extra mile alcohol is even better to follow it with.

I used alcohol to give it a quick wipe before I applied. Haven’t had an issue and it’s been several years since I did it

Perfect I can do that. I was able to pick up the headliner last night so I’ll be swapping it once I get the sound deadening.
