Hello everyone!

I bought myself a 1998 Mustang GT 4.6 Convertible Manual last year and got it road legal in Europe which was a challenge on its own.

And now I'm in the process of doing modifications to it as it was mostly stock when I bought it.

I've already had it on a Dyno and she made 213HP and 390NM of torque.

I am quite new to the car mechanic hobby, so please be gentle

Welcome to the herd! I owned two 98 GT convertibles, one for me and one for my wife.
I am still fighting myself whether I like having a convertible variant or not (there are very few SN95's on the market in Europe) but in the summer it's so nice to have the top down.

Do you still have a sn95?

No. I moved to a smaller house and had no room for the Mustangs so I sold them. I miss my Mustangs! Mine was a yellow 5-speed, and my wife's was a pink automatic.

Welcome to The Herd! Lots of very helpful and knowledgeable people here, so feel free to ask any and all questions. What modifications are you considering? Are there laws that limit any mods or do you have unlimited freedom in that regard? Just curious… Where in Europe is home, if I may ask? We have a handful of members outside the US and we’re happy to welcome you aboard! Look forward to seeing more pictures and hearing from you and the path you choose with your Mustang.

Cheers!

welcome. What are your plans for it? Keep it stock-ish, go cray cray or?
My plan is to slowly build it up. It's a car that is relatively easy to work on and i will learn a lot by working on it.

My end goal is 400HP. But i am yet to figure out what the best way to go is.
As of right now it's a stock motor with an cold air intake and screamin demon coil packs. I want to fix up some small issues with the car first before i spend money on performance upgrades.

Starting with 213hp, your biggest leap forward to the 400hp mark will be via a supercharger. But, you are wise to fix the small issues first before they become larger issues and then start your performance mods from a solid foundation. What are the “small issues” you’re talking about? Maybe we can help…

I am from the Netherlands! There are a dozen Sn95 V6's driving around here and a few V8's but most of them are automatics, but i HAD to get a manual and i'm glad that i found one!

Modification wise, the end goal is 400HP. I know what i need to do to get there but sourcing the parts and the knowledge is another obstacle. My idea is to get some small issues with the car fixed first (i already have had the absolute pain of replacing the fuel tank filler neck grommet.) After that is fixed, i want to swap the heads to PI heads so the basis for forced induction is set in place. With PI heads will also come different cams (and likely springs and lifters, i am not so knowledge on that front), bigger exhaust, different headers, and eventually a Kennebell supercharger. That all should bring me close to 400HP. Yes there are laws in place here that prevent heavy modifications... but a small mess up (or probably a category thing) while getting the car EU road legal made it written down as a 260HP car. As the laws here state that after a 20% increase in power, you need a re-inspection of the vehicle for both MOT and insurances. This means i can go up to 300HP without having to worry. The biggest concern with upgrading the car will be emissions....

Well, the main one can be as small as a TOB. I just hear a grinding noise when the car is running. Both in neutral and in gear. It's coming from between the gearbox and the engine so i suspect a TOB since it's a common issue with these cars. But i find it odd cause a worn TOB shouldn't sound like this so maybe it's part of the rotating assembly (clutch, flywheel?). But it could also be an bearing.... I will make a video of it later this week. Car drives and shifts fine! No noticeable difference in that. I also topped off the Transmission fluid recently as i replaced the trans fluid a few months ago but forgot to top it off since it was on a slight angle when i did it back then.

The more smaller issues are:
- Car takes long to start when it's up to temperature. Starts near instantly when she's cold. (i suspect that the injectors need cleaning but it could also be a coil pack going bad?)
- Fuel gauge not working. I checked the sending unit and didn't see a problem initially. also checked the circuit board on the dashboard, didn't see anything wrong there but it's also a common issue for the Fuel Sending Unit to go bad so..

Ah yes… emissions :-(
I live in California so my only option for a supercharger is a Vortech, since they have a complete system that CARB (California Air Resources Board) legal and approved.

Welcome. You've come to the right place for modular engine tech advice and we will support you along the way.
Thank you! I love these engines honesty. Relatively easy to work with, plenty of aftermarket availability, and a long lasting engine. I still can't imagine that ford used these engines up to 2014!
