I'm currently in the process of doing a vacation buyout and will soon have $1,500 to finish my GT40 build. Right now I have the upper and lower sitting in the garage. What do you think is the best use of that money? My goal is to push 300 to the wheels, not sure if that is possible but I'd love to try. There is a good set of GT40 heads that I can get for a decent price ($200 ish). Should I even consider those? How would you use that money to complete the build.

Buy a good seat of heads, not the gt40's.

Craigslist is always going to be your pal on finding deals on heads. I see good aftermarket heads loaded for $700-$1500 on CL all day and would run almost double that for bare new heads.

Gotta be careful tho. Make sure to get something in writing cause if you get a set of bad heads then you could be screwed!!!

Last set of used heads I bought for a car I told the guy I wasn't paying him until after a machine shop of my choosing checks the heads out.

He tried to say no but I explained it was that or no deal. Heads checked out fine and I paid for the shop to check the heads. Had the heads been bad I'd of made him pay the shop for checking them.

If person is honestly selling good heads I don't see why they'd have a problem with that.

On3 kit will get you close to where you wanna be. It's a lot of work to get it all together but it's an option.

+1 on aluminum heads, you don't necessarily need new ones and used ones can be just as good, gt40/explorer intakes are ok, add a Ford Racing cam and you are set. I always has a problem with timing on the stock distributor, maybe a billet one if you have the funds

I got my AFR165 heads from a site called racingjunk.com for $900 shipped. They were in great condition. The 165's are very common and plenty out there.
