Pulled the steering column which was not nearly as scary as I anticipated. Followed a YouTube tutorial diligently (1Aauto on a Ranger; same/very similar column)
And now the lock cylinder doesn’t line up. I marked the gear mechanism that engages the actuator, set it back in there as such. Locked the metal retaining tab (pictured) in place and then the green whatchamacallit (pictured) orientated in the same position it came out.

So next I tried lining up those 3 internal pieces according to how the “paddle” at the inside tip of the lock cylinder is facing when the key is in and at the RUN position which is the position where the locating pin can be pushed in flush with the cylinder. I get to about 3/8” from the cylinder going all the way in and it just stops. Ain’t goin’ all the way in, nope!

So what am I doing wrong? Oh, and here’s the kicker: the actuator looks fine so I suspect I just got sold a faulty ignition lock cylinder. Could’ve been a 5 minute job!

You should be able to put the key in and spin the removed cylinder freely to make it line up and that's the exact spot it SHOULD have been taken out... Just check the orientation carefully... You might have to sorta' push the little button to get it through and feel it out the notch, jab that sucker in... Make sure the pin locks... ;)
