Ignition Lock Cylinder problem

So my original ignition lock cylinder was falling apart and the key would come out no matter where it was turned, so I bought a replacement from Rock Auto. I installed this one, but the key only comes out in the accessory position. Is it possible this new lock cylinder is defective or does it sound like there is something wrong in the column?

Anyone run into this before? 95 Mustang GT btw

sounds like the cylinder to me. Did you get it rekeyed to use the original key is are you using the key that came with it?

I did not have it rekeyed. The key in the old lock wasn't an original, and it doesn't match my doors anyhow, so I didn't bother.

Just slid it out of the cardboard tube and into the column.

I ordered another cylinder so I'll see what happens and let everyone know. Just wasn't sure if this is a known problem or if anyone has run into this. The old key came out no matter where the cylinder was positioned so I don't even have anything to go off of.

if you have the door key, first take the cylinder to a locksmith and in 10-15 mins they can rekey the lock so it will all use one key again. They could also make sure it does not pull out incorrectly.

Just the follow up:

I replaced it with a different brand, Dorman this time and I still have the same issue, albeit not as severe.

I couldn't remove the key at all with the power off before, but this new one has a very small spot that I can get it out. Not quite sure what the problem is, whether it's the column or what.

I'm content at the moment, may come back to this over the winter.

Just a suggestion, I re-keyed my car after I bought it (except for the trunk which doesn’t open with the key, and the glovebox). I used a kit from LMR, both doors and the ignition. Works flawless. Just saying.

I had a similar problem. I had to take the column apart. There's a gear that the cylinder hooks into. That gear had skipped a tooth or two. I had to play with it until I got it right. Watch when you give your keys yo a mechanic. The old key does my doors and trunk. The new key is the ignition. They use the wrong keys in the ignition and break it. It's happened twice. 95 ,V6 convertible

FYI - it takes a minute to pop out the ignition cylinder and if you take it(I took mine out right at the locksmith) to a locksmith with your old key, they can make the old key fit the new cylinder. I just popped it back in and took off and then you only have 1 key for the whole car. Takes 10 mins and I think they charged $40 for it.
