Will a 2018 GT IRS swap into a 1997 GT? If so, how hard would it be?

If you're looking for an IRS swap I'd stick with the 99-04 versions. They are almost a direct bolt in with the only needed addition from the rear brakects that weld to the frame? Not 100% on that as I've not done it but I've seen quite a few builds that way. Depending on your power application the 99-01 28 spline version will likely suit your needs and can be had for 1-2k.

I found a 2018 for $900. That’s why I’m asking.

There is a YouTube video that swapped an s550 irs in a new edge. It doesn’t look particularly difficult, but it takes some custom modification. If you’re handy with a welder it can be done.

Are you asking if it's a bolt in deal?
Definitely not.

Having said that, yes it will fit. You can make anything fit. But why go through all the modifications just to save a few bucks on a bolt in 99-04 IRS.

Honestly, if I had to irs swap my mustang again, I’d go with a newer one. They are stronger out of the box and they ride and handle better. Plenty of 1k+ hp s550’s launching on sticky tires with only axle upgrades. The 03-04 irs needs a lot of love to hold that same abuse.

Also, I bought a 36k mile irs from a 2017 gt for $400. That’s what I put in my f100.

Where do you find a 99-04 IRS? Don't they only come in cobra cars? How likely am I in finding one at a local junk yard?

Maybe not at a local junkyard, but they are definitely out there. There is still some out there that may want to swap their IRS for a SRA too.
They probably want some cash on their end though.

very difficult and it would create more problems than it would solve. the 99-04 IRS isn't lacking in any kind of way you'll be able to notice.
i have all the MM dodads in mine and the car could not be more to my liking.... and im very picky.

I was wondering about this too, and principally because New Edge IRS assemblies are starting to look like gold now. When I casually looked into this for my wife's 02 years ago, while they weren't exactly abundant I did see the occasional full take-off for around $1k .. now it's closer to $3k (not to mention the incidental parts any swap would need) - it may be possible to piece one together for less if one is patient and finds deals one component at a time.

S550 take outs are thousands less, that difference buys a lot of tinkering.
