New Key, Old Car

I've been wondering for awhile if it's possible to use a newer Ford key on an older model, like for example on my 94. Maybe not the brand new key but the mid-late 2000's style. I've looked around on the interwebs and haven't really found a ton of info on it. I know Ford started using keys with transponders in them in 1996 so would it potentially be possible to get a newer key to work on a pre 96 car(lock, unlock, trunk, panic, etc.)?
