First oil change on the rebuilt 347. Ford FL-1A oil filter; 5 quarts oil; 10w/30 weight. Oh, and make sure you drain from BOTH drain plugs!
Sound right?

I know you’re supposed to, but I didn’t because it’s a horizontal mount and I wasn’t sure: 1. if it’d spill out and run down the side of the block; and 2. how much to put in where it wouldn’t spill.
Guess I’m used to my Ram where I can fill the filter pretty much all the way up because it mounts on the bottom, in a vertical position!

Curiosity question - where is the second drain plug on the 347?

the 302/347 pan has a front and rear drain because of the shape of it where it goes over the K

info I’m finding calls for 5 qts.
And dipstick reads full (i.e., middle of the cross-hash marks on the dipstick) with the 5 I put in. I haven’t driven it since so maybe the filter will suck up a quart. We’ll see…

Interesting. I could have sworn it was 6, but the interwebs confirm 5 is correct. I'll exit now lol. No idea where I got 6.

I added the 5-at jug. I’ll pick up a matching quart and check, see if it needs it next time I drive it.

Ford originally specified 5 quarts for the 4.6L. But later changed it to 6.0 and changed the oil type due to oil pressure problems on cold engines.

Whatever the suggested oil capacity is, youll find your first oil fill up will be more because the engine was dry. Starting at 5quarts is good. Then youll discover later after its ran a bit it needs more. Just keep a check on it

Yes.
And yes!
Ram the first oil, including zinc additives, through the break in and for 1500 miles. I just now changed that oil out for Castro’s GTX 10w/30

Ran it a bit today: around the block, up the street, down the block. Checked oil level... 5 quarts holding steady in the middle of the hash marks on the dipstick.
