Re: Open Road Racing pics

Thanks folks! I have more pics that I will post up later this evening.

Open Road Racing is an event that takes place on open highways that are temporarily shut down to the public. In Texas, the Big Bend Open Road Race (Hwy 285)is held in April of each year and the RoadRunner Open Road Race (Hwy 385) is held in October. There are other races in Nevada (Silver State & Gamblers Run) and Nebraska (Sandhills Open Road Race).

The object is to pick a “Target Speed†that you wish to run and average that exact speed over the full course. At BBORR & RRORR you can choose speeds from 85MPH up to unlimited (200+). Each Group has a “tech†speed that you can not exceed. For example we run the 110MPH class and we have a tech speed of 124MPH. Which means that we can not exceed 124MPH if we are behind and need to make up time.

The race consists of two “legsâ€Â. BBORR we run 59 miles each way for a total of 118 miles. RRORR is 40 each way for a total of 80 miles.

You have a driver and a navigator. The navigator is more important than the driver. We use a motorcycle intercom system so we don’t have to yell. The navigator keeps the course notes and relays info to the driver. He tells him to speed up, slow down as well as what turns are coming up as well as the difficulty.

It is an absolute blast. You get to haul ass on an open West Texas highway for one day and the cops just sit on the side of the road, smile and wave as you go by at 120+.

The event is mainly dominated by Corvettes. 40-60% of the field is Vettes. I’m trying to get more Fords out there.

Re: Open Road Racing pics

dude, you just don't know how much fun it is until you do it!! kinda like sex... :rollinglaugh:

here are the radar trap speeds from RRORR 05 event.

RADAR RESULTS

For example in the first line, the blue print is the car # and the red is the Target Speed for each.... the same applies on down. THE 4TH NUMBER IS THE TECH SPEED. (that is why the forth number is the same for several cars in a row)the one in black bold is the 2000 Turbo R. The solid red line is us. we only ran 100MPH that year because the engine only had 100 miles on it.

yeah, there are a bunch of folks from california that run the nevada races. probably about 10-15 come to texas too.

if you start doing this, you will want to come to texas and run here too. the road is second to none. the surface is perfect. the roads wind up and through the hills and cut-throughs of west texas. most can take the corners here at speed because you can go shoulder to shoulder and apex every corner.
