Paint color deception!!! Now what?

When we purchased this car from a 3rd party, we were told it is Deep Violet. It's a 97 GT convertible, and in their garage, it definitely looked violet(ish). But, I've never seen a Deep Violet in person, so who am I to question it? Since getting it home, we've done a good bit of work on this & that. This weekend, I hammered out a couple dents & am now ready for a bit of touch-up paint. So... I went to get the paint code from the door tag so I could be sure to order the correct color. "UA". Sweet. That's easy to remember.

I go inside to start browsing websites to find the right place to order our UA "deep violet" paint.. but I'll be damned if every site I go to pulls up freaking "ebony black" when I enter the UA code. WTF?

Upon further investigation, Deep Violet's code is JA.. UA is for sure Ebony Black. So... this is just one MORE effed up thing we've discovered with this car (ie: '99 transmission, non-standard freeze plugs, all sorts of issues with the speedometer not working, ODB2 not getting any speed input at all - which we now know is a VSS vs OSS compatibility related... It's just been a hot steaming mess.)

Confused by this odd color conundrum, we decided to go out & really inspect the car with pessimistic eyes... and sure as shit... it's frigging black.

So now, the question is... how the actual hell do we find touch-up paint for this thing?? **facepalm**

if you were thinking that you were going to take that code, enter it into a website and they would send you a bottle that would match the fade that every car has after time perfectly, not gonna happen. You would be just as good taking it to autozone and matching it up by eye, maybe take it outside to compare or see it in natural light.

Now if you really want it perfect it can be done but you will have to pay a little more than the average touch up bottle that they already rape you for. If you can find a paint supply shop they might be willing to take a measurement and mix you up a little bottle and that would be the closest match but it will NOT be cheap.

Option #C paint or wrap it....

i dont recall ever seeing violet, i have seen many laser red or purple
You've never seen Violet? Weird.. it's right there in your list. There are apparently two codes for it though.. The one I've seen the most for the Mustang's "Deep Violet" has been JS. The same(ish) color was also used on the F-150, but they call that "Thistle", and the code I've seen for that one is JU. **shrug** The two codes appear to be fairly synonymous now when ordering paint for either Deep Violet or Thistle. Not sure why they'd have two codes for the same color, but I'm sure there's a good reason.

Thanks for the positive encouragement... but no, I'm not that ignorant. I'm well aware a 25 yr old vehicle won't be the same color it was when it rolled off the production floor. But having the original paint code & a small bottle of the original touch up paint is a much better starting point than just saying I need a "sorta purplish color". The two spots that need the touch up paint aren't large, and aren't on a flat outside surface. It's a door edge, so even if it isn't a 100% match, once it's blended, I really doubt anyone will notice.

Thanks for the tips though. We'll certainly keep them in mind.

UA black has been a staple in Ford's pain line up since the 80s.

As far as paint matching goes, remove your fuel door, bring it you your local auto paint supply store, and they will give you back an exact paint mix ratio for your color.

That's what I'm doing to make sure the Saleen speedster top matches the rest of the car lol.

Go to an auto paint supplier and get the paint scanned and then compare the color to Ford colors. Chances are that the car has been repainted.
