Hi all I’ve come across this engine to replace my broken 2001 mustangs Romeo engine. Now I do know that the engine engine in the photos is a Romeo engine but is there a way to tell if it has PI or non PI heads?
Also the engine dipstick tube is towards the rear of the engine where as my mustangs current engine has its dipstick tube towards the front of the engine so is this 4.6 Romeo engine for another car?A50FF120-4796-40CE-B769-17CD38641817.jpeg2F7B13F8-E770-42A1-A2F0-67C3FECF50C0.jpeg57AB0C4F-83FB-4EB9-B238-178DC38D5E99.jpeg08BC9C03-171E-438A-B071-34AA00D35422.jpeg31636C30-0E9F-4AAD-827F-FDF7CC98D2B4.jpeg883CE83C-E760-4B5F-92A4-518E0A281598.jpegA1E72AE6-1D3D-47F6-9557-300057A00563.jpeg

Im no expert but I would say the dip stick in the back would go to a truck or something else because the power booster is in the way and the forward DS would be correct. mine is also in the front but mine is a DOHC
as far as PI I am going to guess the intake is diff on the PI due to changes in the head geometry. at least that is the case on the DOHC

I am sure someone that knows will come in and correct all of my misinformation, because, well I am just guessing..

Cant see the casting numbers on the heads, but the pink injecotrs are a giveaway for PI's .

Also my current broken Romeo engine has its oil filler cap on the engines left hand side but the new engine has it on the engines right hand side does that mean anything?

Welp, it appears the this motor has COP ignition. This would be a good clue towards PI heads also. I thought NPI cars all had two coil packs, and the COP started with PI?

499E4A24-FE0E-4378-8DA1-45E808A78C9C.jpeg Ok I’ve just found a photo of an English car called a MG ZT 260 which uses the ford Romeo engine so it looks like the engine I’ve just brought is an MG ZT 260 engine so it must have the PI heads overwise it wouldn’t be called the 260
Hope the dam thing still fits, looks like the sump is slightly different as well

I have two 98 GTs. Both are NPI motors and have coil packs, not COP. I think coil on plug started with the New Edge PI motors in 1999.
I stand corrected.

Did some checking, crown vics got them in 98.
5.4 trucks had them back in 97.

I somehow had it in my head that the Mustang went COP when they went with that goofy one year fuel system.

Are you able to pull the intake? That'll make it really easy to make sure it's a PI engine.

The dipstick, oil pan, and valve covers can be swapped as needed.

Just giving another option. Buzzing off an intake doesn't take long.

PI intakes have the number 1 runner pointing towards the driver's side. Runners are thicker & rounder. NPI are more rectangular. Pic from my 98 intake swap: NPI on L and PI on R20190601_154259.jpg 20190615_170430.jpg

Agree!! the first runner points to cylinder number 5. and the shape size of the intake runners is a give away. He has a PI motor there.

Just need to remove the old engine and get the new one in. What is the best way to do that?
What’s the best places to lift the engine by?
Can I lift the engine with the long tube headers still attached or do they need to be removed first?

I only have a crane and some straps and that’s it. Is it easier to remove engine and gearbox as one or just the engine on its own?
