I have a weird one for you guys. My 00 Gt has intermittent power steering. It’ll work fine when it first starts then I turn the wheel, power steering fluid level drops to the low mark and I lose power steering. Some revving and it’s back to normal. Could that be caused by air in the system? I can’t find anything online.

Pump could be on its way out or the fluid is contaminated and clogging up the lines

I’m going to flush the fluid when I get the chance but I think it’s the pump going out. If it’s the original motor it has over 200k miles on it so I wouldn’t doubt it.

tied into the hydro boost system
What happens if a power steering pump fails?
  • Similar to the vacuum booster, the hydro-boost is equipped with a backup or reserve in case the source of pressurized fluid is lost. A failure in the power steering system, such as a broken hose, broken power steering pump drive belt, or failed pump, would result in a loss of pressure to both the hydro-boost and steering gear.

Yeah it returns to normal. It’ll drop and I’ll have no power steering then it’ll return to normal and I’ll have steering back.

When I was at Ford hurtz we had pressure gages to test the steering and hydro boost

So I realized it cuts out below 1000 rpms, is it a bad pump or maybe from the underdrive pullies?

I forgot about that pulley set
Thats possible
You would think it turns quicker
But maybe to quick
Hmm
I dont care under drive pulleys
Same thing for hydraulic clutch cylinders

Not yet no but do you think that would cause this issue? And to be clear the only two pullies that were replaced are the crank and water pump, the rest are oem.

I am not sure how udp's would effect it but now if the fluid isn't good, correct or its just old than I could see that causing a problem. When I troubleshoot I start simple and then work my way up.
