Did just that. I’m happy with the results (fronts)...

Rust? Ha, that's nothing! My brother in law told me months ago the back brake had a bad caliper. They were driving it until this week like this. Ya think the caliper is froze open? We did the fronts together, then he had to go home and left me with this mess...hamster brakes.jpg

It gets worse. Now I know why the parking brake handle just flops around without doing squat... I wouldn't care a whole lot, but it's a stick car.

The car drove OK (except for making left turns when you braked :)). I could turn the rotor by hand. Well, two hands and a lot of grunting! It looks like the caliper piston froze in the bore in the retracted position, and the parking brakes weren't touching the inside of the rotor. After some C4 and a case of brake cleaner I'll know more...

I finally got to the bleeding stage (the car, my knuckles have been bleeding for a while now). He had given me two bottles of brake fluid he said were unopened. Well, both bottles were full but opened. One hand, I should just use what he gave me. Other hand, I want to do it right. GRRRRRRR!

Fire the mechanic? Nah! The mechanic is a buddy of mine and even loans me tools. He told my brother in law it needed to be fixed a year ago but my brother in law decided it wasn't a priority. Can you fire family?????

He knew a year ago one caliper was frozen. He knew the parking brake didn't work. He asked me months ago if I would help with the brakes, and I said yes, but it took him until last week to get the parts. He decided other things were more important. SMH!

Does your brother in law have life insurance on you or just not like you :) ? I am not sure why the mechanic tells your brother in law what is wrong with your car but if he knew they were like that and didn't tell you I would be suspect. Sarcasm of course is my middle name.

Whoa, big fella! It is my brother in law's car, not mine. We go to the same mechanic, Bob, a good friend of mine with a small independent shop. Bob told him a year ago to take care of this. My BIL asked me months ago if I would do the brakes for him if he got the parts and I said sure, whenever you are ready. His (stupid) choice to put if off this long. The only danger to me in this whole mess, unless I was in traffic in front of him in the last year or riding in the car itself, was tetanus from working on those rusty brakes LOL. I'm just glad it's done except for the bleeding, both the brake system and the blood blister on my finger from being pinched by the e-brake cable end. :)
