Replacing my pcm, ford dealership quoted me $180 to program my chipped key to the new pcm I install, now is there a way I can do it by myself, and what type of PATS system do 98’ Ford have? Is there a certain way to program the key pertaining to what type of pats system I have (A, B C, D, etc). Little side note as well, I only have the chipped key, I no longer have a separate fob with lock, unlock, trunk etc.

Yes there’s a way to do it I’ve done it numerous times . You can find a thread in 2 mins with a quick google search .

A bit of a weird issue im having, my key didnt get programmed yet to my car, the PCM I bought is programmed to my vin, now back to my key not being programmed yet, even though it isnt programmed it still tries to crank my car but now I dont hear my fuel pump priming, itll click when I turn my key to the “ON” position but not prime and when I turn it to crank, it cranks but im not getting fuel, did my fuel pump go bad and my key works without needing programming or is the issue im having just a symptom of not having the key programmed?

I thought pats shut down the motor by shutting off the fuel system. You could test the pump by disconnecting the inertia switch in the trunk and putting power to the correct wire going to the pump. You will hear it if it primes, but I also though pats shut down the injectors even if you have fuel pressure?

Wow, learning alot here. This is the very reason why folks switch up to aftermarket ecu, but they so dang expensive.

From my personal experience with my theft system going off before the PCM going bad, it would completely immobilize my car to the point where i couldnt even crank it. But as to where now, it cranks just doesn’t turn over because no fuel is being put to it.

According to the chart, pats does not have a starter interrupt feature until 2005. I had a broken pats antenna on my gray 02 gt that would sometimes kill the injectors and a 98 v6 that would turn over but not start with a spare key I had cut.

A laptop and Forscan or IDS software with corresponding USB/OBDII interface and software is the ticket... Google it, because it is money well spent if you have some technical abilities... You will need 2 cut keys with chips...

Good luck and keep us posted,

Edit: Just saw the OP has a '98. The below applies to 99-04 cars. 1998's use a different process for programming and not sure the below will work.

------------------
It can be done using ForScan. (for 99-04 cars) In fact, you can do cluster swaps using ForScan. Unfortunately you can't correct the mileage with a cluster swap.

But you would open up "PATS key program" and first initialize the IC (instrument cluster) to the ECM. After that, you can program two or more (up to 8) cut keys to the cluster pretty easily.

I did a YouTube vid on programming the keys. I don't have the module initialization process part of this but you would just select module initialization prior to the key programming.

Some better bidirectional scan tools can do this too. I have an Xtools D7 which lists PATS programming as a feature but i've never tried it since I prefer ForScan instead.
