Replacing broken side mirror glass - compatibility and procedure questions

I need another glass for a 94-98 mirror. At the junkyard all I could find was a 99-04 mirror. I popped off the 99-04 glass and held it up to the 94-98 housing and they looked to be the same. Also the backsides seem to match. Can anyone verify 100% that they're the same 94-04?

Also the other question - when I pulled off the glass there appeared to be 2 separate sections to the circular piece and I think one part was supposed to stay on the housing assembly? On the circular part there's two small white fingers with teeth. It looks like some gears in the housing turn the teethed fingers to move the glass? If that part pulls off does that mean the housing is ruined?

May not be much help, but I slammed my door and the glass popped off mine. Replaced it from Orielly auto parts, just the glass, for like $5. Mine is a 96.
