Hey everyone...

Car off

Slightly left-right, or right-left on the steering wheel there is an audible CLUNK left, CLUNK right, or visversa....
Sounds like it's in the interior of the car, footwell area.

I did replace the inner and outer tierods very recently, and the sound was there before and after. Steering shaft joints? Rack bushings?

Any thoughts?
Thank in advance :)

your def on the right track.
the rag joint is easy enough to see and replace too. and you can go with a u-joint upgrade.
The rack bushings you'll need help because someone will need to turn the wheel back and forth while your under the car.

Thanks CC ... I'll check into what you advised, and find a helper for the steering rack!

I think I may have found my clunk. Update to follow.
The rag joint looks good... The whole shaft is loose coming through the firewall... Yikes!

I've never heard or seen one of those go bad. Or what it's called. Steering shaft support bearing?
I guess a trip to the salvage yard is in order. For research if nothing else.

Well, I found out Ford calls it a steering shaft plate...
And ya, I think there's a bearing in there ...
Ford no longer offers this part :/
So a trip to the salvage yard is in the future!

That steering shaft sounds awesome... I wish I had the extra cash to throw at that part.
Thanks again for taking a minute to check the thread.

That piece supports no weight. It isn't supposed to be rigid. The boot is just there as a seal, and any bearing or bushing you find in there, is just to keep the boot from snagging.

You're about to waste a whole lot of time, and money... Replacing that for a steering clunk.

Why not take the hour or so to remove your steering shaft, and check the u-joints in it.
